UNSC urged to refer Myanmar to International Criminal Court

The European Parliament passed a resolution yesterday, urging the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Myanmar.

They also urged the UNSC to adopt targeted sanctions against those natural, and legal individuals who appear to be responsible for serious human rights violations.

COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - When more than 730,000 Rohingya fled into Bangladesh from Myanmar in 2017, Bangladeshi journalist Sharif Azad was sympathetic to the plight of his fellow Muslims, survivors of a military-led crackdown the United Nations has branded genocide.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said Myanmar should take the displaced Rohingyas back as they have emerged as a big burden for Bangladesh.

"Rohingyas are a big burden for Bangladesh. Local people of Cox's Bazar have to face sufferings because of them (Rohingyas)... Myanmar should take their citizens back," she said.

The prime minister said this when visiting Chair of UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Anne Main-headed UK Conservative Friends of Bangladesh (CFoB) and the delegation of UK APPG on Population, Development and Reproductive Health jointly met the Prime Minister at the latter's official residence Ganobhaban in the city.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron has recorded his disappointment with Myanmar state counsellor Aung Saan Suu Kyi over the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in the country, particularly over her claim that “they are Bangladeshis”.

Cameron recalled his 2013 meeting with Suu Kyi in his memoir, ‘For The Record’, released on Thursday. The Myanmar leader was feted by western countries for her pro-democracy struggle but is now a pariah due to her not condemning or acting on the Rohingya issue.

UN human rights experts have raised new concerns about the treatment of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh following a deadly backlash over the killing of a ruling party official.

The experts called for an “impartial” investigation into the deaths of at least six Rohingya men in gunfights with police after they were named as suspects in the killing of Omar Faruk, a youth wing official of the ruling Awami League.

Two years ago, Bangladesh took in nearly 750,000 Muslim Rohingya refugees who had been driven out of Myanmar by a military crackdown. These attacks were referred to as ethnic cleansing by the United States, whereas United Nations investigators referred to them as crimes against humanity.

At that time, many questioned whether Bangladesh, a country with a population of more than 160 million and a developing economy, could take in such a large number of refugees. Considering that the refugees were fellow Muslims escaping severe human-rights violations, the foremost concerns may have been related to the humane aspect of the issue. However, the practicality of how Bangladesh would manage such a huge influx of refugees economically and socially was also of tremendous concern.

Hundreds of thousands of ethnic Rohingya who remain in Myanmar may face a greater threat of genocide than ever, amid Government attempts to “erase their identity and remove them from the country”, UN-appointed independent investigators said on Monday.

 

In a report detailing alleged violations in Myanmar over the last year, the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission, insists that many of the conditions that led to “killings, rapes and gang rapes, torture, forced displacement and other grave rights violations” by the country’s military, that prompted some 700,000 Rohingya to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh in 2017, are still present.

Rahima Akter hid her Rohingya identity to enrol at a private university in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar, but her dreams of pursuing higher education were dashed after she was suspended by her university earlier this month.

The 20-year-old from Kutupalong refugee camp has become the face of the struggle of Rohingya refugees who want to study, as Bangladesh does not allow Rohingya to enrol in schools or colleges.
