UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee on Sunday met Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and discussed issues related to Rohingya crisis, reports UNB.

Lee, who arrived here on Saturday, will visit Cox’s Bazar to see for herself the Rohingya situation there amid Myanmar’s continued denial to her access to Rakhine State.

Kuala Lumpur, Jan 20, IRNA – The UN chief accused Myanmar government of delaying return of Rohingya Muslims from Bangladesh and urged Naypyidaw to establish more cooperation with international bodies.

'I feel an enormous frustration with the lack of progress in relation to Myanmar and with the suffering of the people,' the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said addressing a press conference.

He added 'we insist on the need to create conditions for them to be willing to go back,' he said.

'Things have been too slow,' he reiterated.

Myanmar army told to stage push against Arakan rebels.

NAYPYIDAW: Myanmar’s military announced that the Arakan Army, a Buddhist rebel group in Rakhine state, has been classified a terrorist organisation after mounting a flurry of recent attacks.

The state earlier was the site of a brutal counterinsurgency campaign by the military against the Muslim Rohingya minority, causing more than 700,000 to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh.

YANGON—Six policemen, including one police colonel, were wounded during an ambush by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) on Wednesday in northern Rakhine State, according to an announcement on State media on Saturday.

A year-and-a-half after more than 750,000 Rohingya Muslims were forced out of Myanmar by its genocidal government and military, the community still lives in a state of limbo. Rohingya refugees are scattered throughout Asia, with most seeking safety in Bangladesh, but have had to face constant discrimination and threat of deportation. India has been the worst offender, wantonly disregarding international law on refugees to demonise the Rohingya as illegal aliens who pose a security threat.

More Rohingyas are waiting to enter Bangladesh through Brahmanbaria’s Kasba border from India amid fears of deportation to Myanmar.

“As many as 31 Rohingya women, men and children have gathered on the border,” Major Md Shafiq of the Border Guards Bangladesh told reporters.

The BGB officer said a decision would be taken after a flag meeting with India’s border guards.

YANGON (Reuters) - Six Myanmar border guard police have been wounded in an attack by Rohingya Muslim insurgents in Rakhine state, government media reported on Saturday, amid fears of escalating violence in the region.

About 10 armed attackers from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) ambushed a border guard post near Wet Kyein village in Maungdaw township in the north of the state on Wednesday, according to the government-controlled Myanmar TV network.
