UN chief calls for Myanmar's cooperation to return Rohingyas.

Kuala Lumpur, Jan 20, IRNA – The UN chief accused Myanmar government of delaying return of Rohingya Muslims from Bangladesh and urged Naypyidaw to establish more cooperation with international bodies.

'I feel an enormous frustration with the lack of progress in relation to Myanmar and with the suffering of the people,' the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said addressing a press conference.

He added 'we insist on the need to create conditions for them to be willing to go back,' he said.

'Things have been too slow,' he reiterated.

Guterres went on to say that “It's not only physical reconstruction; it's a matter of reconciliation of communities and strong commitment by the government for that reconciliation of communities to be possible and for the safety of the Rohingya population to be guaranteed.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi, too, had earlier condemned brutal crimes by military forces against Muslims in Myanmar.

'During the three previous decades, Iran has continuously protested against politicization and discriminatory approach taken by the United Nations General Assembly, Qasemi said.

He noted “despite the fact that human rights resolutions have always received negative vote by Iran, but due to the depth of the crimes in Myanmar Iran slammed the Myanmar moves and stressed on resolute support of Rohingya Muslims.'

Prior to the 2015 Rohingya refugee crisis and the military crackdown in 2016 and 2017, the Rohingya population in Myanmar was around 1.1 to 1.3 million. They reside mainly in the northern Rakhine townships.

Many Rohingyas have fled to neighboring states. More than 100,000 Rohingyas in Myanmar live in camps for internally displaced persons, not allowed by authorities to leave.
