The Rohingya are a minority community living in Rakhine State in Myanmar. The Muslim Rohingya are considered intruders into Buddhist Myanmar - illegal immigrants from bordering Bangladesh. They have been always discriminated against, looked down upon, ostracized, and denied any civil and judicial rights.

How did Rohingyas get Bangladeshi passports?

As reported by the domestic and international media, dozens of stateless Rohingya individuals are being deported to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia. They allegedly went to the country with Bangladeshi passports, which they had obtained from smugglers who manufactured fake or counterfeit documents for them. Some of them are now being sent to Bangladesh, having spent years languishing in jail, while some others still remaining there.

UN human rights expert to visit Bangladesh soon

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, will visit Bangladesh soon apart from her visit to Myanmar's another neighbour Thailand.
Lee's two-nation visit will begin on January 14 and end on January 24, according to a message received from Geneva on Friday, UNB reports.

Having a landslide victory at the national election held on 30 December 2018, Bangladesh Awami League has formed the government on 7 January 2019. The Hon’ble Ministers of the new government have already joined their respective Ministry. I was about to write on foreign affairs as pledged by Awami League in its election manifesto. But for the last few days, a number of reports on the Rohingya issue, published in the local dailies, have forced me to write about this matter right now. However, I agree that the Rohingya issue has been included as a part of the foreign affairs pledge in the election manifesto.

City of London Corporation councillorshave voted in favour of removing the honorary freedom award granted to Aung San Suu Kyi over her failure to condemn atrocities committed against the Rohingya people in Myanmar.

Today the Corporation's prime legislative body, the court of common council, voted in favour of a motion proposed by Portsoken councillor Munsur Ali that would see the Corporation start the process of revoking the award.
