Daw Aung San Suu Kyi yesterday called on all people in Myanmar to strive for developing a true democratic federal union, urging them not to rely on the government alone.
“The true democratic federal union that we desire hasn’t been realised yet. To make it happen, all the people need to strive for it,” she said in her speech during an event to mark Kachin State Day on January 10 at Manaw Garden in the state capital of Myitkyina.
“Depending on the government alone is undemocratic. As democracy is based on the people, the government has to rely on the power of the people,” she added.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi participated in a traditional Manaw dance together with residents and government personnel, expressing her admiration on the beautifully dressed people in their national custumes.
“Traditional costumes of our national races are different. I feel very glad to see various costumes of our people. This is a Union. It is beautiful with the diversity of different races, she said.
“Celebrating the Kachin State Day together in Manaw is a sign to keep on heading on the path of unity by encouraging and relying on each other,” she added.
After the Manaw dance, the state counsellor met with religious leaders. She will stay in Myitkyna for two more days.
“The attendance of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is good. The government has been in office for three years and now we are celebrating the Manaw Festival of Kachin State Day. I think the occasion has positive points,” said Dr Tu Jar, chairman of the Kachin State Democratic Party.
The Manaw Festival continues until Saturday. from January 10 to 12.
