Japan will consider increasing its humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh, a prominent Japanese lawmaker said yesterday.

"We are planning to visit Cox's Bazar tomorrow. We would like to see the situation and provide some humanitarian assistance based on the actual needs there," said Nakanishi Yusuke, director of the committee on general affairs, House of Councillors at the National Diet.

Concerns are mounting over the World Food Programme’s (WFP) decision to slash food support for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh due to a funding crisis.

On March 1, the WFP, citing a $125m donation shortfall, cut the monthly food vouchers for the refugees from $12 to $10 per person, warning further cuts were “imminent” without an immediate cash injection.

The United States announced on Tuesday $26 million in new humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and elsewhere in that region of Asia.

Around one million members of the mostly Muslim Rohingya community live in squalid relief camps in Bangladesh, many after fleeing a 2017 military crackdown in neighboring Myanmar. The onslaught caused one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

The government has been accused of abandoning Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh after cutting aid to the humanitarian response by more than 40%.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) pledged £27.6m to the humanitarian sector’s joint response plan launched this week, compared with £47.5m last year.

The European Union is providing €150,000 (close to BDT 15 million) to step up its support for Rohingya refugees affected by the massive fire that swept through refugee camps in the Bangladeshi southern district of Cox’s Bazar in March this year.

This follows the initial assistance of €500,000 announced last week as an immediate response to the blaze.

“The fire has caused many Rohingya refugees, who have lived in displacement in camps over the past three years, to yet again lose almost everything,” said Daniela D'Urso who oversees the EU’s humanitarian response in Bangladesh.

(New York, 24 March 2021): UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock today released US$14 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to provide urgent shelter and other assistance to tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees after a devastating fire tore through the Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh — the world’s largest refugee camp — on 22 March.

Estimates indicate that the fire displaced more than 45,000 mostly Rohingya refugees, originally from neighbouring Myanmar, with many more affected. A hospital and other critical health, nutrition and education structures were destroyed.

While UK aid is doing tremendous good abroad, refugee policies at home need work.

In recent months, there have been UK government proposals to build a floating wall in the English Channel to keep out migrant dinghies, install water cannons that create waves to push away refugee boats, and create offshore detention camps on islands thousands of miles away.

The UK has hardly thrown its arms open to refugees in 2020. Indeed, asylum seekers are perhaps more likely to be met with war ships than welcome banners. It’s led to Global Citizen launching a campaign urging people to write to their MP, asking them to offer safe passage.

Japan on Wednesday pledged to provide some USD 329 million (equivalent to 35 billion yen) to Bangladesh as grant for combating coronavirus (COVID-19) in Bangladesh.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made the announcement when he talked to his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina over phone in the afternoon, said PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.

The German government has made a fresh contribution of US$4.5 million for the welfare of Rohingya families and their host communities in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

With the latest, the German contribution to the Rohingyas now reached US$30 million since the onset of the refugee crisis in 2017, says a WFP statement on Wednesday.

“This contribution will support the Government of Bangladesh to meet its commitment to the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals as well as their host communities in Cox’s Bazar. Lifesaving assistance is particularly important now with the ongoing pandemic and heavy monsoon rains, both of which are posing great risks to vulnerable families,” said Md. Mohsin, Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.

The World Bank (WB) has provided $35 million to Bangladesh to help ensure basic services and utilities for the Rohingyas currently residing in Teknaf and Ukhiya upazilas of Cox's Bazar.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has partnered with the UN World Food Program (WFP) to support community resilience in the Rohingya camps here.

This funding is part of the World Bank's $165 million grant meant to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. The WFP is partnering with the disaster management ministry to implement the project.

United Nations agencies and NGO partners have appealed for $877m for about 855,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar and 444,000 vulnerable Bangladeshis.

The 2020 Joint Response Plan, or JRP, for the Rohingya humanitarian crisis was launched on Tuesday, the UNHCR said in a statement on Tuesday.

Japan has decided to extend approximately $17 million as additional support to Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya minority taking refuge in southeast Bangladesh.

The additional funds will also be used for the betterment of host communities in the town of Cox’s Bazar, the Japanese embassy in Dhaka said Tuesday.

The support includes site management of refugee camps; community empowerment; shelter upgrade; child protection; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities; medical services and training; environmental rehabilitation; life skills and livelihood improvement and nutritional improvement, the statement said.

S. Korea to help Rohingya aiding 50,000 radios and related education

The South Korean government says it will give 50,000 radios to Rohingya Muslims resettling in Myanmar.
These radios are aimed at helping them access information on administrative, health and education matters, among others.
Seoul has invested 500-thousand U.S. dollars to help some 730-thousand Rohingyas, becoming the first country to participate in ASEAN's new support program for the minority group's resettlement.
