RAB Thwarts ARSA Plot and Uncovers Looming Crisis in Rohingya Camps

In the heart of Ukhiya camp No. 20, a clandestine operation unfolded on February 14, 2024. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) of the Bangladesh police apprehended three high-ranking members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA). Among them was Abul Hashim, the second-in-command, and a bodyguard of ARSA chief Ataullah Jununi. Foreign-made firearms and cartridges were discovered in the camp, hinting at a sinister plot.

Unmasking ARSA's Shadowy Presence

The RAB received a tip that ARSA assailants were orchestrating a major act of sabotage. Acting swiftly, the elite force infiltrated the camp and disrupted their nefarious plans. The arrests mark a significant victory in the ongoing struggle to maintain security and order amidst the turmoil of the Rohingya refugee crisis.
A Looming Crisis and its Human Cost

The Rohingya crisis has cast a long shadow over the region since 2017, with over one million refugees seeking asylum in Bangladesh. As the World Food Programme (WFP) grapples with funding shortages, monthly food rations for the Rohingya refugees have been slashed. To alleviate the burden, Bangladesh has sought a $1 billion loan from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB).

However, concerns over relying on foreign loans have been raised by Transparency International Bangladesh. The financial strain has led to deteriorating conditions in the Rohingya camps, resulting in a surge of criminal activities and juvenile offences.
The Road to Repatriation: A Stalled Journey

Bangladesh had initially planned to repatriate 1,140 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. However, the process has stalled due to escalating conflicts and security concerns. The 2024 Joint Response Plan (JRP) aims to secure $872.7 million to support the refugees and 300,000 vulnerable host communities living in Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas.

As the situation unfolds, the RAB is slated to provide more details at a press briefing in Cox's Bazar. The revelations from this covert operation underscore the complexities of the Rohingya crisis and the unyielding resolve of those striving to maintain peace and stability.

In the face of adversity, the resilience of the human spirit prevails.
