A senior Tatmadaw peace negotiator and a senior leader of the Arakan Army met on December 9 in Shan State as talks between the two sides intensifies, a source privy to the ongoing negotiations told The Myanmar Times.

The source said the meeting between a Tatmadaw major general and Nyo Tun Aung, the vice chair of the Rakhine ethnic armed group, was held in the headquarters of the United Wa State Army (UWSA) in Pangkham township in Wa’s self-administered region in Shan.

UWSA, the country’s largest ethnic armed group and AA are holdover groups that refused to sign the government initiated Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).

Rohingyas in Bangladesh who survived genocide in Myanmar are experiencing a "severe" mental health crisis, according to data in a new report published on Thursday by Fortify Rights.

The report includes quantitative data on Rohingya experiences with human rights violations in Myanmar, traumatic events in Myanmar, symptoms of mental harm—including post-traumatic stress, depression, and anxiety—functioning difficulties, as well as Rohingya opinions on returning to Myanmar.

The United States has long noted its appreciation for the Government of Bangladesh’s commitment to hosting the Rohingya refugees but is concerned about the relocation of 1,642 Rohingya refugees to Bhasan Char and plans to carry out further relocations. The United States concurs with the UN that any such relocations must be fully voluntary and based on informed consent without pressure or coercion.

Bangladesh has stated that Rohingya refugees may return to camps on the mainland if they choose. The United States calls on the Government of Bangladesh to adhere to this commitment and demonstrate respect for the human rights of refugees relocated to Bhasan Char, including freedom of movement, by facilitating refugees’ ability to move to and from Cox’s Bazar. Refugees on Bhasan Char should have access to livelihoods and basic services, such as education and health care.

If Dhaka fails to mount due pressure on Naypyidaw from the very beginning of the newly elected government, Rohingya repatriation issue may lag behind, putting Bangladesh through unnecessary troubles

More than one million people, forced to leave their homeland amid cycles of mass killings, gang rapes, and arson attacks for decades and who have taken shelter in a neighboring country as stateless people, can never be an internal matter of any country. The issue drew greater global attention with 700 thousand Rohingya fleeing their country and crossing the border to Bangladesh three years ago now within a span of just a few months. Thus, the Rohingya refugee crisis is no more a domestic or internal matter of Myanmar; rather, it is now one of the most crucial global crises.

The clump of silt in the Bay of Bengal could be inundated by a single strike from a cyclone. Before this year, no one lived there.

But on Friday afternoon, seven Bangladeshi naval boats carrying more than 1,640 Rohingya Muslims landed on the low-slung island of Bhasan Char, as part of the Bangladeshi government’s plan to ease crowding in refugee camps where more than a million Rohingya have lived since fleeing systemic persecution and violence in Myanmar.

Rights groups have decried the resettlement, saying that the Rohingya, yet again, were being forced to move against their will.

“The relocation of so many Rohingya refugees to a remote island, which is still off limits to everyone including rights groups and journalists without prior permission, poses grave concerns about independent human rights monitoring,” Saad Hammadi, a South Asia campaigner for Amnesty International, said on Twitter.

The Netherlands and Sweden have called for urgent need for a UN assessment on the safety, feasibility and sustainability of Bhasan Char as a place for refugees to live.

The call came after a visit by the two European ambassadors to Cox's Bazar where about a million Rohingyas are living in congested refugee camps.

At least 1642 Rohingyas were transferred to Bhashan Char on December 5 amid criticism from the UN and rights bodies who say the island in Hatiya of Noakhali is low-lying and isolated. UN said it was waiting for assessment by a technical team of the UN.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has sought access for the UN partners, including the UNHCR, to the Rohingya people who have been relocated to the Bhasan Char island.

‘UNHCR and UN partners seek access to them in order to hear their voices, understand their wishes and see conditions on the island,’ Filippo Grandi said in a tweet, adding that any transfer must follow a voluntary and informed decision.

The Bangladesh government has recently relocated a total of 1,642 displaced Rohingya people of Myanmar to Bhasan Char from Cox’s Bazar camps amid concerns of the UN offices in Bangladesh and protest from several foreign rights bodies.

Armed groups in Myanmar - including the United Wa State Army and the Arakan Army, which was designated a terrorist organisation this year - are acting as Beijing's proxies by supplying weapons and providing hideouts to insurgent groups in India's north-eastern states, according to Indian officials with knowledge of the situation, who asked not to be identified due to rules on speaking with the media.

နိုင်ငံရေးအကျဉ်းသားဟောင်းတွေပါဝင်တဲ့ လက်ရှိအာဏာရ အမျိုးသားဒီမိုကရေစီ အဖွဲ့ချုပ် (NLD) အစိုးရ အနေနဲ့ ငါးနှစ်တာသက်တမ်းအတွင်း နိုင်ငံရေးအကျဉ်းသား ရာနဲ့ချီ ဆက်လက်ရှိနေသေးသလို အစိုးရရော လွှတ် တော်ကပါ ဖိနှိပ်တဲ့ဥပဒေတွေ မပြင်နိုင်သေးတာ၊ နိုင်ငံရေးအကျဉ်းသားအဖြစ် သတ်မှတ်နိုင်ဖို့ အဓိပ္ပာယ် ဖွင့်ဆိုချက် ကိစ္စကိုတောင် မလုပ်ဆောင်နိုင်သေးတာတွေကို ထောက်ပြ ဝေဖန်နေကြပါတယ်။
