Dhaka seeks strong global response to resolve Rohingya crisis

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Friday said Bangladesh will take a tougher position over Rohingya issue saying the global leadership must resolve it quickly to ensure greater peace and stability in the region.

“We tried our best, we worked as per your suggestions but finally it (repatriation) didn’t happen. We’ll make our position stronger,” he said. The Foreign Minister was talking to reporters after a discussion titled “15 August and Its Impact on Bangladesh” at Bangabandhu Memorial Trust auditorium organised by Awami League’s international affairs sub-committee.

BNP on Friday alleged that the government has diplomatically failed to initiate the repartition of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.

“The government couldn’t do anything to start the repatriation of Rohingyas. It's been a long time since they (Rohingyas) came here, but you (govt) couldn't still send any of them,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. He further said, “It’s an utter failure. You’ve failed diplomatically to send the Rohingyas back.”

Locals storm Rohingya camp after Jubo League leader’s murder

Hundreds of agitated locals stormed a Rohingya camp and vandalised makeshift houses and NGO offices following the murder of a local Jubo League leader in Teknaf.

They burned tyres and plastic boxes to block a five-kilometre road from Teknaf municipality to Leda Point in Cox’s Bazar for three hours. The residence of Rohingya leader Noor Mohammad was also torched. Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said they persuaded the agitated locals to end their blockade around 3:00 pm assuring them of arresting the killers and bringing them to justice.

BNP vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mitoo said the government is not serious about sending back Rohingyas to their homeland Rakhine state in Myanmar. Mentioning that the ruling government an unelected one, the BNP leader said the government failed to mount global pressure over Myanmar authority to take back their people from Bangladesh. He also said the incumbent government has not been getting enough global support over this crucial situation as they were not an elected government.

 Myanmar on Friday pushed blame for its second failed attempt to repatriate the Rohingya on Bangladesh, a day after not a single refugee turned up to return to conflict-scarred Rakhine state.

The Myanmar military waged a brutal crackdown on the stateless Muslim minority in western Rakhine state, leading to an exodus of more than 740,000 Rohingya to neighbouring Bangladesh. The region remains riven by religious and ethnic conflict.

“We are still hopeful,” he said on Friday, a day after a second failed attempt to start the repatriation of Rohingyas, two years after 700,000 Myanmar nationals fled ‘ethnic cleansing’ in the Rakhine State and took shelter in Cox’s Bazar.

 TEKNAF, BANGLADESH - Rohingya refugees living in camps in Bangladesh said Wednesday that they did not want to return to their homes in Myanmar, raising doubts about a fresh attempt to repatriate the stateless, mainly Muslim minority.

On Thursday, Bangladesh and Myanmar were hoping to begin repatriating a few of the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees who fled a military crackdown two years ago, after a previous attempt in November failed.

TEKNAF — A fresh push to repatriate Rohingya refugees to Myanmar fall flat on Thursday, with no one turning up to hop on five buses and 10 trucks laid on by Bangladesh.

Members of the Muslim minority, 740,000 of whom fled a military offensive in 2017, are refusing to return without guarantees for their safety and a promise that they will at last be given citizenship by Myanmar.

Plans to begin repatriating the thousands of Rohingya Muslims who fled ethnic cleansing in Rahkine state in 2017 look likely to fail once again, with the refugees refusing to go back to Myanmar voluntarily.

Over 3,000 Rohingya were placed on a list of refugees and approved for repatriation as part of a fresh attempt by the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar to start sending back some of the more than one million refugees living in squalid camps in Cox’s Bazar.
