Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai on Monday urged Myanmar leaders to take "immediate action" to prevent the persecution of the country's Rohingya Muslims, most of whom are considered by the government to be illegal immigrants.

The 17-year-old, who was shot by militants in her native Pakistan for campaigning for girls' rights, said that Rohingyas deserved "equal rights and opportunities" and called for them to be integrated into the country.

"I call on the leaders of Myanmar and the world to take immediate action to halt the inhuman persecution of Burma's (Myanmar) Muslim minority Rohingya people," said Malala.

This past week, we witnessed a horrifyingly sad display of international indifference toward hundreds of people stranded aboard rickety boats. Photographs circulating in the world press show these unfortunate people pleading for mercy and tears rolling down their cheeks. Struggling with starvation aboard makeshift boats, these poor souls weren’t allowed entry to various countries and turned away to meet their inevitable fate out in the ocean.

ISLAMABAD – In an open letter to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said that silence and complete inaction by the UN on the continuing plight and persecution of the Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar is a shameful testatment to the failure of the UN to fulfill its basic principles of upholding human rights and protecting people from genocide.

Khan said that more that 120,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled abroad under desperate circumstances and conditions in the past three years.

“Even today the Rohingyas have been abandoned on the high seas with no humanitarian assistance forthcoming,” he added.
