GOMBAK: Malaysia needs to consider the International Criminal Court (ICC) as one of the avenues to bring the Myanmar government to justice over the Rohingya genocide, says former Foreign Affairs Minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar.
He said since Myanmar did not want to address the crisis in the Rakhine state, the genocide and ethnic cleansing there would continue with no concrete solution in sight.
“The ICC is not a last resort, but it is one of the avenues that we have to seriously consider unless Myanmar takes some positive step to change the situation,” he told reporters at the International Symposium On The Path To Justice For The Rohingyas here on Tuesday (March 26).
“The prepetrators of the crime of genocide, crime against humanity and gross violation must be brought to justice. It is about humanity and justice,” he said.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia member added that an ICC move would signal to Myanmar that the international community was serious about wanting to end the Rohingya genocide.
Syed Hamid said Myanmar had to practice inclusive democracy like Malaysia.
“In the case of Malaysia, because of our inclusiveness, we are able to have our independence and strength to build a Malaysian nation.”
“You cannot deny the rights of citizens by excluding minorities. The Kachin [ethnic group in Myannar is also suffering, Shan [ethic group] is also suffering,” he said.
Organised by Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM), the symposium exploring the ICC and other international accountability mechanisms was held at International Islamic University Malaysia.
