JAKARTA, Jan 8 (Reuters) - A boat with 185 Rohingya refugees landed on the shores of Indonesia's Aceh province on Sunday, a local disaster agency official said, following hundreds who arrived late last year fleeing desperate conditions in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

The boat came ashore in Ujong Pie village, a day after a wooden vessel with 57 Rohingya landed in another part of Aceh.


At least 185 Rohingya refugees have landed in Indonesia’s northernmost province of Aceh after drifting at sea for weeks, police and rights activists said.

The boat came ashore in Ujong Pie village on Monday, a day after a wooden vessel with 57 Rohingya people landed in another part of Aceh on Christmas Day.

“The group consists of 83 adult males, 70 adult women and 32 children,” said Aceh police spokesman Winardy, who goes by one name, in a statement.

The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority, have for years sailed to countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia between November and April when the seas are calmer.

Hundreds have reached Aceh in recent years, many having been at sea for months.

In Myanmar, the Rohingya are widely considered to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, despite being born in Myanmar.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia — More than 100 hungry and weak Rohingya Muslims were found on a beach in Indonesia’s northernmost province of Aceh on Sunday after weeks at sea, officials said.

The group arrived on Jangka beach near Alue Buya Pasi, a fishing village in Bireuen district, early Sunday. The villagers who saw the 114 ethnic Rohingya on a rickety wooden boat helped them to land and then reported their arrival to authorities, said Badruddin Yunus, the leader of the local tribal fishing community.

JAKARTA: A boat carrying scores of Rohingya refugees including women and children broke down and was stranded in waters off the coast of Aceh province on Indonesia's Sumatra island, local authorities and humanitarian groups said on Monday (Dec 27).

Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have for years sailed to countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia between November and April when the seas are calm.

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Monday the boat carrying the Rohingya was spotted on Sunday in waters off Bireuen, Aceh and it was working with local authorities to rescue the group.

'Best of humanity': Indonesian fishermen rescue stranded Rohingya

Aceh residents bring stranded Rohingya ashore themselves in defiance of authorities as rights groups urge ASEAN action.

Nearly 100 Rohingya people who were stranded off the coast of Indonesia were pulled to shore on Thursday by local people furious at local authorities' refusal to give them shelter because of fears about the coronavirus.

Some 94 people from the persecuted Myanmar minority - including 30 children - were plucked from their boat by fishermen this week before being intercepted by maritime officials from Sumatra island who pulled them closer to shore.

Indonesian fishermen rescue dozens of Rohingya refugees in Aceh waters

Three Indonesian fishermen rescued 94 foreign nationals who are believed to be Rohingya refugees in the waters of North Aceh regency on Wednesday morning.

The fishermen – Faisal, 40, Abdul Azis, 40, and Raja, 30 – rescued the foreign nationals from a sinking cargo ship using their fishing boat, the KM 2017.811.

They attempted to transport the group to Kuala Tanah Jambo Aye in Seunuddon district, North Aceh, but their engine was broken, leaving them stranded 4 miles from the coast of Seunuddon.
