Exclusive: EU preparing sanctions on Myanmar military businesses, documents show

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union is preparing to widen its sanctions on Myanmar’s armed forces to target businesses they run, in protest at the Feb. 1 military coup, according to diplomats and two internal documents seen by Reuters.

The measures, which diplomats said could be agreed by EU foreign ministers on March 22, would target companies “generating revenue for, or providing financial support to, the Myanmar Armed Forces”, said one of the documents dated March 5.

While the bloc has an arms embargo on Myanmar, and has targeted some senior military officials since 2018, the measures would be its most significant response so far since the coup.

Authorities in Bangladesh on Friday sent the first group of more than 1,500 Rohingya refugees to an isolated island despite protests by human rights groups.

The 1,642 refugees boarded seven Bangladeshi naval vessels in the port of Chittagong for the trip to Bhashan Char, according to an official.

After about a three-hour trip, they arrived at the island, which was once regularly submerged by monsoon rains but now has flood protection embankments, houses, hospitals and mosques built at a cost of more than $112 million by the Bangladesh navy.

By accepting Myanmar’s rigid official racial and religious categorizations, the EU-funded app runs the risk of entrenching sectarian divides.

A donor-funded election app designed to provide information to Myanmar voters has come under fire for its potential to inflame racism and religious nationalism ahead of elections on November 8.

The mVoter 2020 app, which was launched on September 29, was developed by the Stockholm-based organization International Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), under the EU-funded STEP Democracy program. The app was built in partnership with The Asia Foundation and Myanmar’s Union Election Commission (UEC).

Representatives of the international community in Bangladesh conducted a two-day visit to Cox's Bazar and visited the Rohingya refugee camps. They reiterated their commitment to support Rohingya refugees in a joint statement on Thursday

The representatives include the ambassadors of the United States (US) and the European Union (EU), the British High Commissioner, the Head of Humanitarian Aid of the Canadian High Commission, the World Bank (WB) Country Director, and the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator.

Rescued Rohingya grateful for local support after 120 days stranded at sea

 EU partner IOM Indonesia continues to provide round-the-clock care to the 99 Rohingya rescued and allowed to disembark in North Aceh last week after more than 120 days stranded at sea. Concerns are raising about another boat with 500 Rohingya on board, according to authorities in Jakarta.

Malaysian officials have also reported that at least 300 are on a vessel off the Coast of Koh Adang Island in Thailand. No further details are available but roughly, 1,400 Rohingya have been stranded at sea during the 2020 sailing season, which typically ends with the arrival of the monsoon in late May. At least 130 have died according to various estimates.

EU commits € 32mn for host communities, Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar

The European Union (EU) has announced €32 million or Tk 304 crore in funding to contribute to the needs of Bangladeshi host communities of Cox’s Bazar and Rohingya in the camps.

The allocation came in support to the generous efforts deployed by Bangladesh by hosting around one million Rohingya.

Some € 12 million or Tk 114 crore will be dedicated to COVID-19 responses and € 20 million or Tk 190 crore will address the need of both host communities and Rohingya through an integrated approach on improved access to basic services in education, food security and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and enhance their resilience and protection.

Bangladesh has urged the European Union to put more pressure on Myanmar to take back Rohingya refugees living in makeshift camps in Cox's Bazar.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen made the appeal during a courtesy phone call with Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Coveney yesterday, said a press statement issued by the foreign ministry.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has sought continued support of the European Union (EU) including Italy to ensure safe, dignified and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas.

“The Bangladesh prime minister also expressed thanks to the EU including Italy for their support to the cause of the Rohingyas,” said a nine-point joint statement issued on the outcomes of bilateral talks between Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her Italian counterpart Giuseppe Conte in Rome on Wednesday.
