Kaladan project’s port and river terminal completed

The construction of Sittwe’s sea-port and the inland water terminal in Paletwa has been completed, the Indian embassy said in a July 9 statement in Yangon.
The sea-port and water terminal forms part of the US$484 million Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project that would link Kolkata in India to Sittwe in Rakhine State and then link Sittwe via a river route to Paletwa in Chin State and from Paletwa by road to Zorinpui in India’s northeastern state of Mizoram.

Arakan Army’s allies threaten to join fight against Tatmadaw

Two armed ethnic groups allied to the Arakan Army (AA) have threatened to join the fight against the Tatmadaw (military) if the fighting escalates, according to a statement by the groups.

Northern Rakhine refugees resist relocation to Bangladesh island.

Bangladesh is facing a dilemma over the planned transfer of thousands of Muslims from northern Rakhine State crowded into makeshift camps along the country’s border with Myanmar to an uninhabited island in the Bay of Bengal.

To ease social, economic, environmental and internal security hazards, the government plans to relocate nearly 100,000 refugees from the camps in Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char, which is about an hour by motor boat from the nearest shore.

Prison authorities and police have quelled unrest at Sittwe prison in Rakhine State, apparently caused by some inmates upset that they had been left out of the president’s annual amnesty, a police official said on Sunday.

Local residents rushed to the prison late Saturday after hearing gunfire inside its compound.

Civilians hit by Rakhine fighting

More than 50 civilians have been killed or are missing due to fighting between the Tatmadaw (military) and Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine State, according to an investigation by the Arakan National Party (ANP).
Led by ANP Vice Chair Daw Aye Nu Sein, a nine-member commission set up on March 20 investigated the fighting in Buthidaung, Rathedaung, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U and Minbya townships.

The Rakhine State government is moving ahead with economic development plans for the northern part of the state.

State official say the plans will involve the Kanyin Chaung Economic Zone, Pone Nar Kyun Industrial Zone and livestock and agriculture zones in northern Rakhine.

Govt orders crackdown on Arakan Army.

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has ordered a crackdown on the Arakan Army (AA), said U Zaw Htay, director general and spokesperson of the President’s Office.


“Acts that affect peace and public security go against the rule of law. The government will take counter-insurgency actions in such incidents,” U Zaw Htay told the media at the Presidential Palace on Saturday.

Court indicts four Arakan youths in slaying of Tatmadaw corporal

The Sittwe Court has charged four youths with the murder of a soldier in Rakhine State, a lawyer for the accused said.

The court indicted the suspects on Monday in the killing of Corporal Phoe Lone, lawyer U Tun Aung Kyaw said.

KNU, RCSS must make clear timeframe for suspension of talks

A friend who follows the peace process from afar wrote to me recently and asked, “Is Myanmar trying to keep a ceasefire that may no longer exist soon?”


His comment came following the suspension of cooperation in November by the two biggest ethnic armed organisations – the Karen National Union (KNU) and Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) – that signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement in October 2015.
