Court indicts four Arakan youths in slaying of Tatmadaw corporal

NAW BETTY HAN 16 JAN 2019

The Sittwe Court has charged four youths with the murder of a soldier in Rakhine State, a lawyer for the accused said.

The court indicted the suspects on Monday in the killing of Corporal Phoe Lone, lawyer U Tun Aung Kyaw said.

Cpl Phoe Lone of the 1st Military Security Affairs Unit in Yangon was shot to death in Sittwe at around 9pm last September 25 after visiting Wingabar Grounds Fair with his family.

“The court decision was based on evidence presented by the police, but I am sure that [the suspects] were not in the area when the killing happened, as they were in the company of legislators from Rathedaung township,” U Tun Aung Kyaw said.

The four youths were identified as May Yu Htun of Sittwe, Aung Chay of Buthidaung township, Khai Bo Bo of Pauktaw township and Ye Zaw.

May Yu Htun, Aung Chay and Khai Bo Bo were granted bail of K10 million (US$6290) each by the court on November 7. Ye Zaw, who was arrested on December 15 in Yangon during the celebration of Rakhine State Day, was not allowed to post bail. On Sunday, police re-arrested the three suspects.

Daw Aye Nu Sein, vice chairman of the Arakan National Party, which posted the bail for the three suspects, said they are staunch advocates of promoting and protecting the welfare of the Arakan people.
