Two armed ethnic groups allied to the Arakan Army (AA) have
threatened to join the fight against the Tatmadaw (military) if the
fighting escalates, according to a statement by the groups.
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army issued the warning amid continuing clashes between the AA and military. “As members of an alliance, we have to take necessary action against the fighting,” the statement said.
It added that the alliance is still assessing whether the military is interested in a ceasefire in Rakhine State.
“As an alliance, we called on China to take an active part in the negotiations for implementing the peace process. We are ready to talk under the leadership of the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee,” it said.
Efforts to reach the military’s True News agency for comment on the statement were unsuccessful.
Nearly 40,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since fighting between the AA and the military in Rakhine began in November. Several people have been killed and injured in the clashes.
