Maungdaw township official U Myint Khine said the date of the assessment team’s visit hasn’t been set yet.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday that the visit is in line with an agreement between Myanmar and ASEAN for the AHA Centre to analyse the repatriation of displaced people from Bangladesh to prepare for action by the ASEAN Emergency Response and Assistance Team (ASEAN-ERAT).
Rakhine Chief Minister U Nyi Pu said local authorities will cooperate with ASEAN to facilitate the repatriation.
“The development of Rakhine is as crucial as humanitarian aid. If jobs could be created, it would help the people of the state,” U Nyi Pu said.
AHA Centre officials are expected to conduct a preliminary study of receiving returnees, and examine measures taken by the Myanmar government to facilitate the repatriation.
At the ASEAN Summit in Singapore last November, leaders heard a briefing from Myanmar on the humanitarian situation in Rakhine. They said the issue was a matter of concern and the bloc stood ready to support Myanmar in the repatriation. They welcomed Myanmar’s invitation to the AHA Centre to send an assessment team to identify areas of cooperation in Rakhine that would facilitate the repatriation.
