NEW DELHI, Jan 17 (Reuters) - The number of Rohingya fleeing Myanmar or Bangladesh by sea surged fivefold to more than 3,500 in 2022 from a year earlier, the U.N. refugee agency said on Tuesday, in the deadliest year for the ethnic minority group at since 2014.

At least 348 Rohingya died or went missing as they attempted to cross the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal last year, with the figure reaching alarming levels after the sinking of a boat in December, with all 180 Rohingya Muslims on board presumed dead, the UNHCR said in a statement.

(Bangkok) – Bangladesh’s Armed Police Battalion (APBn) is committing extortion, arbitrary arrests, and harassment of Rohingya refugees already facing violence from criminal gangs and armed groups, Human Rights Watch said today. Donor governments should press the Bangladesh authorities to investigate alleged abuses against Rohingya living in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, ensure that victims have effective remedies, and develop measures to better protect refugees.

The refugees are facing violence from criminal gangs and armed groups and therefore are already vulnerable, said the rights watchdog in a report released today.

The police unit has been in charge of security of the camps since 2020.

"Refugees and humanitarian workers report that safety has deteriorated under the APBn's oversight due to increased police abuses as well as criminal activity. Some refugees allege collusion between APBn officers and armed groups and gangs operating in the camps," said the report.

January 13, 2023, marks 51 years of bilateral ties between Myanmar and Bangladesh. Myanmar recognized Bangladesh as a sovereign state on January 13, 1972. There were many ups and downs between the two neighbors over these 51 years. Why was this? Because the relations between Bangladesh and Myanmar were strained time to time. But this strained tie must be smoothed for ensuring greater regional interest. But Myanmar-Bangladesh needs to strengthen ties for ensuring the greater interest of the two regions such as South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Another Rohingya leader was killed in a span of 12 hours, in Balukhali camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar early Sunday.

The deceased was Mohammad Selim, 35, son of Abdus Sobhan of the camp.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya police station Sheikh Mohammad Ali said Selim was killed after a group of miscreants “from Arsa” called him from his house early in the morning and shot him.

A police team reached the spot after receiving the information, but the miscreants had already fled the area, he said.

ဘိုကလေးတွင် ဖမ်းမိသည့် ကလေးငယ်များ ၁၂ ဦး အပါအဝင် ရိုဟင်ဂျာ ၁၁၂ ဦးကို စစ်ကောင်စီက ထောင်ဒဏ် အသီးသီးချမှတ်လိုက်သည်ဟု တရားရေးနှင့် နီးစပ်သူများက ပြောသည်။

စက်လှေ သောင်တင်ကာ ဝမ်းဗိုက်ပေါက်ပြီးနောက် ဖမ်းဆီးခြင်းခံရသည့် ရိုဟင်ဂျာ ၁၁၂ ဦးကို ဧရာဝတီတိုင်း ဘိုကလေး မြို့ နယ် တရားရုံးက ထောင်ဒဏ် အသီးသီး ချမှတ်လိုက်သည်ဟု ဘိုကလေး တရားရေးဌာန နှင့် နီးစပ်သူများ၏ ပြောပြချက်အရ သိရသည်။
