1. Introduction

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), after the United Nations (UN) is the second leading international governmental organization, with the membership of 57 states from four continents. [1] It represents the Islamic world and strives for protecting its interests. Bangladesh, a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has conceded much of the socio-economic, political and security cost of providing asylum to approximately 1.2 million Rohingya refugees. The institution has so far played an important role in the Rohingya crisis through fundraising and legal support.

LONDON: Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative to the UN, Abdallah Al-Mouallimi, and the UN’s special envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, chaired a virtual meeting about the Rohingya crisis on Tuesday.

Representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Contact Group on the Rohingya Muslim Minority were briefed on the latest developments in the humanitarian situation, and discussed how best it might be addressed, taking into account the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The delegates also talked about the latest political developments in Myanmar.

Islamic Zakat donations reached millions of refugees in 2020

Compared to four years ago, Zakat funds increased in record numbers last year, helping more than two million refugees across the world, according to UNHCR.

The latest Islamic Philanthropy report of the UNHCR has shown that Islamic Zakat donations in 2020 saw a big increase compared to previous years, amounting to $61.5 million, reaching more than two million displaced people across the world.

Compared to the period of 2016-2018, when Islamic donations had reached more than 34,000 people, last year, both Zakat and Sadaqah, along with Sadaqah Jariyah, which are other forms of religious donations, helped nearly 2.1 million people in total.

While stating that he has written to his counterpart in Myanmar in this regard, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said Bangladesh wants to initiate the repatriation of Rohingyas this year.

Bangladesh has written to Myanmar over the issue of repatriation of Rohingya Muslims. The announcement by Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen comes days after the UNGA passed a resolution in this regard.

While addressing a press briefing on Sunday, AK Abdul Momen said he wrote a letter to his counterpart in Myanmar on the occasion of the New Year. "In the New Year, a letter has been sent to the State Council office in Myanmar," Momen said.

The two day 47th session of 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC's) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting began in Niamey, Niger today emphasising on the unity of Muslim world in addressing Islamophobia for peace and development.

Niger President Mahamadou Issouifou inaugurated the OIC's foreign ministers' meet while OIC Secretary General Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen addressed the opening ceremony held at Mahatma Gandhi International Conference Centre in the Niger capital.

In two days, the foreign ministers of OIC countries will discuss wide range of issues specially the situation of Muslim minorities and communities in non-member states that includes crisis of Myanmar origin Rohingya Muslims, who have been forcibly displaced to Bangladesh following a military crackdown in Rakhine three years back.

The Rohingya crisis is among the gravest tragedies in modern times, a senior Turkish diplomat said Tuesday.

In a ministerial committee meeting on the persecuted Muslim group held by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kıran underlined that the U.N. Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the matter had recorded incidents in Myanmar involving "genocidal intentions."
