The boats are the latest in a surge of vessels that have arrived in Aceh, most carrying Rohingya refugees from southern Bangladesh, where the persecuted Muslim minority fled in 2017 following attacks by the military in their homeland of Burma.

The hardships of our lives have compelled many Rohingya to make the difficult choice to migrate to different destinations. Since 2012, many amongst us have migrated to Malaysia via an irregular route encompassing Myanmar's mountains, the sea, and the Thai border. Despite the high number of detentions and people going missing in Myanmar and Thailand in this process, the refugees continue to knowingly opt for this path. Meanwhile, human trafficking remains rampant in camps.

More than 200 people protested yesterday in western Indonesia against the continued arrival of Rohingya refugees by boat, claiming that the sudden influx of people threatens to overwhelm local communities.

Significant ground, air transport, and land border transit disruptions continue as armed clashes in northern and western Myanmar persist, as of Dec. 18. The disruptions started after the military commenced ground and air operations in response to coordinated attacks by a coalition of anti-regime militant groups Oct. 27. The attacks primarily targeted military installations, military-controlled villages, security checkpoints, and major interstate highways. Lashio Airport (LSH), Loikaw Airport (LIW), and Kalaymyo Airport (KMV) remain closed indefinitely; it is unclear when normal operations will resume. Militants have reportedly occupied over 180 junta military bases and closed at least four official border crossings with China, with curfews active in Sittwe, Rakhine State, and multiple areas of northern Shan State. The conflict has displaced around 660,000 people. Further clashes are likely across northern Shan, Kayin, Kayah, Mon, Chin, and Rakhine states, and Mandalay, upper Sagaing, and Magway regions, including near border checkpoints with China, Thailand, India, and Bangladesh over the coming weeks.

The central government must help the people and government of Aceh deal with the ongoing influx of Rohingya refugees and, if necessary, take over their humanitarian burden. The beleaguered Rohingya, our Southeast Asian neighbors, have fled their homes and shelters to escape systematic ethnic cleansing and seek a better future.
