Concerns mount over UN food aid cut for Rohingya in Bangladesh

Concerns are mounting over the World Food Programme’s (WFP) decision to slash food support for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh due to a funding crisis.

On March 1, the WFP, citing a $125m donation shortfall, cut the monthly food vouchers for the refugees from $12 to $10 per person, warning further cuts were “imminent” without an immediate cash injection.

ရန်ပုံငွေ ရှားပါးလာတဲ့အတွက် ဘင်္ဂလားဒေ့ရှ် ဒုက္ခသည်စခန်းတွေမှာရှိတဲ့ ရိုဟင်ဂျာဒုက္ခသည်တွေကို ပေးနေတဲ့ အကူအညီတွေကို ရှေ့လ ၁ ရက်နေ့က စပြီး ၁၇ % လျှော့ချမယ့်အကြောင်း WFP က ဒီလ ၁၇ ရက်နေ့က ကြေ ညာထားတာပါ။ လက်ရှိမှာ ဒုက္ခသည်တဦးဟာ လစဉ်ရိက္ခာ အထောက်အပံ့ ၁၂ ဒေါ်လာ ရနေရာကနေ မတ်လကစပြီး တလ ၁၀ ဒေါ်လာသာ ရရှိတော့မှာ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

Korean contribution to help WFP provide assistance for over 860,000 Rohingyas living at Cox’s Bazar camps

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a contribution of $800,000 from the government of the Republic of Korea to support operations in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Japan to provide $10m in emergency aid for Rohingya, host communities

The Japan government has said it will provide 10 million US dollars in emergency grant aid to support the displaced Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.

Of the total grant, 5 million US dollars will be provided to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), 4.3 million US dollars to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and 0.7 million US dollars will be provided to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for humanitarian assistance, according to a press release of Japanese Embassy received today (Thursday).

864,281 Rohingya refugees in the camps*

(52% children, 45% adult, 3% older persons and 1% persons with disability)

113,157 household (570,000 people) in the host community received assistance through the COVID-19 special support programme from April to November 2020.

Highlights

• WFP currently has nine operational Fresh Food Corners at e-voucher outlets and inkind distribution points and provided fresh vegetables to over 99,000 vulnerable Rohingya refugees in November.

• WFP conducted environment and social safeguard screenings of 115 community workfare schemes and 18 camp-wide tree maintenance sites to ensure that planned activities will not have an adverse impact on ecosystems and communities.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia signed virtually on Thursday an agreement with the US to implement a multi-sector refugee support program in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

The agreement aims to rehabilitate housing with a total value of $2 million, and will be managed by the World Food Program (WFP).

Korea gives $300,000 to WFP as food support for Rohingyas

Republic of Korea Ambassador Lee Jang-keun has announced a new contribution of US$ 300,000 to World Food Programme (WFP) Bangladesh, to support its operations that provide food assistance to 860,000 people in the Rohingya camps.

WFP assists 100 percent of the Rohingya population across 34 formally established camps with nutritious food, engineering, school feeding, and self-reliance or livelihood training in the Rohingya camps and surrounding host communities, said a press release issued here today.

“We are grateful to donors like the Republic of Korea who continue to support us in assisting the Rohingya refugees who remain entirely dependent on external support,” said Richard Ragan, WFP Country Director in Bangladesh.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reopened its fresh food corners at Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar, allowing trade and business activities to resume after months of closure due to Covid-19 prevention measures.

By May 2021, WFP hopes to bring the farmers' market to 30 percent of the population at the camps, with monthly transactions touching $500,000.
