OP-ED: Bangladesh is being held hostage

October 12th, 2020
Abandoned by all BIGSTOCK

With little support from the international arena, what is the future of the Rohingya in Bangladesh?

On October 5, Vikram Doraiswami, the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to the country, arrived in Bangladesh. He told reporters at the land port in Akhaura: “Bangladesh is one of India’s closest friends, and thus we are eager to continue and enhance our bilateral relationship with this neighbouring country.”

Beijing is now more interested in keeping Bangladesh as a development partner through the continuous effort of distancing Dhaka from Delhi. Recently, Sino-Indian relations with Bangladesh are looking great, but the reality is different.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is calling for renewed support and solutions for displaced and stateless Rohingya communities both within and outside of Myanmar today.

Three years on from the latest exodus of Rohingya refugees who fled Myanmar and sought sanctuary in Bangladesh from August 2017 onwards, challenges persist and continue to evolve. The COVID-19 pandemic has added additional complexities. The international community must not only maintain support for refugees and their host communities, but adapt to critical needs and expand the search for solutions.

Harrowing stories remain unheeded

MUNAWIR, a Rohingya man in his 20s, was at home in Sittwe, a district in Rakhine state of Myanmar, when his neighbourhood was attacked and houses there burnt by assailants. Eighteen people were killed in the ensuing massacre, including his two brothers.

Seeing his desperation, an agent later persuaded him to board a ship to Malaysia, promising him a better life and assuring that he did not have to pay anything.

However, once Munawir was on the small vessel, a gang approached his mother in Sittwe to demand 600,000 Burmese kyat (RM2,000) for his journey, which she fearfully paid.

It's said that crises expose and exacerbate existing structural weaknesses.

The COVID-19 pandemic is exposing and exacerbating one of our greatest weaknesses - the treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum around the world.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates there are now more than 70 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, including almost 30 million refugees and more than 40 million who have fled to other parts of their own country. Last year more people were forcibly internally displaced than ever before.
