Saudi King invites Hasina to attend OIC summit

Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) – Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to attend the 14th Islamic Summit of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to be held at Makkah at the end of Ramadan.

The world’s top Islamic intergovernmental body has unanimously adopted a resolution to pursue legal recourse through the International Court of Justice to seek accountability and justice for large-scale human rights violations committed against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, a statement issued by Bangladesh’s foreign ministry said.

The OIC has unanimously adopted a resolution to move at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for establishing the legal rights of the Rohingyas and addressing the question of accountability and justice.

The Bangladesh foreign ministry termed the resolution adopted by grouping of Muslim countries in the Abu Dhabi meeting on Monday a “major diplomatic breakthrough”.

The Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee on Accountability for Human Rights Violations Against the Rohingya ended Sunday its meeting in The Gambia with a renewed commitment to apply more pressure on Myanmar as the Muslim minority continues to face persecution. 

“The OIC must not leave it to others alone to demand accountability for crimes committed against fellow Muslims, especially when the affected Muslim community constitutes a minority in a State as the Rohingyas are in Myanmar,” said Gambia Justice Minister Aboubacarr Tambadou in a statement delivered during the inaugural meeting of the OIC Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee held at Labranda Coral Beach Resort & Spa in Brufut, Gambia.
