Earlier this month, Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar, became the first person in history to win a Nobel Peace Prize and defend against accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Since 2017, More than 700,000 Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority in Myanmar, have fled the country as Myanmar’s military began attacking their villages, sexually assaulting women, killing thousands, and in some accounts, throwing babies into fires. The military claimed these attacks were a counter-terrorism operation to stop a Rohingya insurgent group.

Myanmar nominal leader’s defense of Rohingya crackdown at ICJ boosts her re-election chances

To much of the world, Myanmar’s nominal leader Aung San Suu Kyi is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate turned genocide denier. At home, she is seen as a heroine who went to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to defend and uphold her country’s honor, though not necessarily in defense of the powerful military with which she has been at loggerheads for years.

In our blog on 10 December, we wrote about why Aung San Suu Kyi may have decided to personally lead the defence against charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Now that the first round of hearings is over, what has been the impact of that decision?

In the run-up to the hearings, state media went into overdrive portraying Aung San Suu Kyi as defending the nation against false accusations. The case was portrayed not as a state to state case focussed mainly on crimes by the military, but rather as one against the people of the country and an attempt at damaging the reputation of the country. Private media largely followed the same line, with some even saying it was everyone in the country being accused.

Burma’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has asked the U.N. International Court of Justice to drop the genocide case against Myanmar, formerly Burma. Suu Kyi is a Nobel Peace Prize winner who spent over a decade fighting against the Burmese military, which she is now defending. Last week, Suu Kyi appeared in person at the court to dispute the charges and called the allegations of genocide against Rohingya Muslims “incomplete and misleading.”

On December 10, 2019, the International Court of Justice (the ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, begun a hearing in the case of the alleged genocidal atrocities in Myanmar. The hearing was focused on provisional measures only, as requested by the Gambia, including measures within the Burmese government’s power to “prevent all acts that amount to or contribute to the crime of genocide” and “not destroy or render inaccessible any evidence related to the events.”

In 2012, the world's most famous imprisoned Nobel laureate gave an acceptance speech more than two decades after winning the prize. Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's lonely champion of democracy, had been released from 15 years of house arrest in 2010 as her country's military regime embarked on reforms and the slow opening up of a former pariah state. "The prize we were working for was a free, secure and just society where our people might be able to realize their full potential," Suu Kyi told a rapturous crowd by Oslo's City Hall. "The honor lay in our endeavor. History had given us the opportunity to give our best for a cause in which we believed."
