A Rohingya leader was allegedly hacked to death at Balukhali refugee camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar district on Friday over establishing dominance in the camp.

The victim was Md Azimuddin, 48, a leader of block L/16 of camp-18 in Balukhali.

Bangladesh authorities were holding more than 300 Rohingya in transit camps after police caught them working outside their refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, or while leaving their shelters for other purposes, officials said Tuesday.

Human Rights Watch meanwhile renewed its call for the government to ease movement restrictions on Rohingya, saying that barring refugees from leaving the camps for work or shutting down their shops within the camps only compounds their misery.

The world should not allow the one million Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh to be the cause of instability in the region, said Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki today.

He also urged all to join hands for a sustainable solution to the crisis.

"We should work for creating an enabling environment in Rakhine state of Myanmar for early repatriation," he said at the inaugural of a seminar today.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) and Japanese Embassy in Dhaka co-organised the event titled "Geopolitics of Indo-Pacific and Reconnecting the Bay of Bengal Littorals" at BIISS auditorium.

Another 1,006 Rohingyas have left for Chittagong from Ukhia in Cox's Bazar to Bhasanchar in Noakhali. The law enforcers are taking the Rohingya bus convoy to Chittagong for the first time through tight security at around 1:15 pm on Wednesday. They are scheduled to reach Chittagong at night. Besides, more than five hundred Rohingyas will be sent to Chittagong in the second phase in the afternoon. They will be transferred to Bhasanchar from Chittagong on Thursday.

Earlier, 21,505 Rohingyas from various camps in Ukhia and Teknaf were shifted to Bhasanchar. A total of 22,511 Rohingyas were sent to Bhasanchar. Rohingya relocation activities in Bhasanchar are being conducted by the Office of the Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation (RRRC), various law enforcement agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) including the Armed Police Battalion (APBN).

Bangladesh police have arrested nearly 40 refugees, including many suspected of involvement with illegal weapons and drugs, since they launched a crackdown against criminality at Rohingya camps after community leader Muhib Ullah was slain last month, an official said Tuesday.

Among the dozens of Rohingya refugees taken into custody as part of the crackdown, five are suspected of being linked directly to the Sept. 29 killing of Ullah, a prominent Rohingya activist, at his office in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar district, according to the authorities.

Zaifur Hussein, 50, managed to escape the fire that swept through the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps in March, but he lost his home. While taking refuge with friends, Hussein witnessed dozens of people dying – and how the fences around the camps made it difficult to get out.

Hussein’s story was one of those shared by Reuters news agency in its coverage of the disaster. The March 2021 fire had a devastating effect on these camps, where more than a million refugees live in southern Bangladesh. Black smoke billowed over burning huts and tents as people scrambled to retrieve their possessions.

Covid-19 vaccination campaign for Rohingyas in the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar will begin tomorrow, reports our local correspondent quoting the district's civil surgeon.

Md Mahbubur Rahman, Cox's Bazar district civil surgeon, told The Daily Star that the vaccination campaign will begin 11am tomorrow at the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar. Syed Rezwan Hayat, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), will accompany him.

As Bangladesh continues to struggle to provide adequately for the Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, near the border with Myanmar, the best possible solution for everyone involved — from the Rohingya themselves to their hosts — would be if the refugees could safely return home to their ancestral lands. But, whereas the previous government of Myanmar under Aung San Suu Kyi at least pretended it was interested in allowing the Rohingya to return, the new military junta has already indicated it will stop pretending altogether.

President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozker on Tuesday highly appreciated Bangladesh's efforts for Rohingyas in Bhasan Char saying it will be another example to the world on how to deal with refugees.
