The world should not allow the one million Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh to be the cause of instability in the region, said Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki today.

He also urged all to join hands for a sustainable solution to the crisis.

"We should work for creating an enabling environment in Rakhine state of Myanmar for early repatriation," he said at the inaugural of a seminar today.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) and Japanese Embassy in Dhaka co-organised the event titled "Geopolitics of Indo-Pacific and Reconnecting the Bay of Bengal Littorals" at BIISS auditorium.

The Japanese envoy linked the Rohingya solution as part of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FIOP), a concept that promotes peace and prosperity of the region.

Despite repeated diplomatic moves by the world powers in the last five years, not a single Rohingya could be repatriated – making it a cause of concern for Dhaka.

Naoki said Japan is ready to promote connectivity between Cox's Bazar and Rakhine state for regional economic development.

Supporting Bangladesh's Rohingya relocation policy to Bhasan Char, he said "Bhasan Char should be part of a long-term solution" to the Rohingya crisis, but he did not elaborate.

He said Japan believes in the open and international rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, which would be the centre of gravity of the world economy.

"The Bay of Bengal should receive more economic prosperity. In this context, Bangladesh is a vital country in geopolitical terms," he said.

Stating that Bangladesh will be the fastest growing economy in Asia in this decade, he said, "Bangladesh needs to utilise its geographical advantage and increase economic opportunities fully."

He said Japan has been developing infrastructure projects including Matarbari Deep Sea Port, Metro rail, Special Economic Zone in Araihazar that can be game-changer for Bangladesh.
