Covid-19 vaccination campaign for Rohingyas in the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar will begin tomorrow, reports our local correspondent quoting the district's civil surgeon.

Md Mahbubur Rahman, Cox's Bazar district civil surgeon, told The Daily Star that the vaccination campaign will begin 11am tomorrow at the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar. Syed Rezwan Hayat, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), will accompany him.

Following the government's instructions, all Rohingyas sheltered in camps will be vaccinated in phases, according to Dr Mahbubur Rahman.

Dr Abu Toha MR Bhuiyan, health coordinator at the RRRC office, told The Daily Star, "A total of 48,600 Rohingya will be vaccinated at 34 camps in Ukhia and Teknaf for three days, from August 10."

"Vaccine will be given to those 55 years of age and above in the first stage. A total of 58 immunization centres have been set up in 34 camps," he said.

On a full-time basis, each centre will have two trained vaccinators and three volunteers. In addition, multiple teams will be on the ground to oversee the vaccination centres' activities, according to Dr Abu Toha, who added that after the Rohingya families moved to Bangladesh, the army, in collaboration with UNHCR, used information technology to enlist their names.

"All preparations have been made to ensure that the targeted 48,600 Rohingyas are vaccinated within the three-day time frame. If the vaccination is not completed within those three days for any reason, the activities will continue," Dr Abu Toha said.
