Myanmar says six Rohingya killed in attack were 'with insurgents'

The Myanmar army said Friday that six Rohingya killed by helicopter gunfire in restive Rakhine state were working with a rebel group, the latest escalation in violence that the UN says "may constitute war crimes".

3 suspected ‘Rohingya robbers’ killed in ‘gunfight’

Three suspected Rohingya robbers were killed in an alleged 'gunfight' with police in Habiber Ghona hilly area in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Saturday, reports UNB.

The deceased Nur Alam, 23, Mohammad Jubayer, 20 and Hamid Ullah, 21, are residents of 'A-block' of Nayapara Rohingya camp at Hneela union.

Officer-in-charge of Teknaf police station Pradip Kumar Das said that a team of police conducted a drive around 2:30am on information that a gang of robbers was depositing arms in the hilly area.


Sensing the presence of police, the gang members opened fire, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police retrieved three men sustaining bullet-wounds from the spot.

Later, they died on the way to hospital.

Police also recovered four light weapons from the scene.

Myanmar army says six Rohingya killed in air strike were ‘with terrorists’

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar’s military said on Friday six Rohingya Muslims killed and nine wounded in an aerial attack in the western state of Rakhine this week were affiliated with an armed rebel group.

The army-run Myawady newspaper said the villagers were “together with terrorists while the army was cracking down on the Arakan Army’s terrorist activities” on Wednesday in the township of Buthidaung.

Villagers and a lawmaker in Myanmar’s troubled Rakhine state said on Thursday that a military helicopter attacked a group of Rohingya Muslims gathering bamboo, killing five and wounding 13, but a military spokesman declined to comment.

YANGON (Reuters) – Arakan Army insurgents killed nine Myanmar police in the latest attack in the country’s western Rakhine State, the government said on Sunday, as clashes threaten to engulf a large part of the troubled region.

Villagers heard gunfire as fighters from the armed group, which recruits from the mainly Buddhist Rakhine ethnic group, raided a police post in the village of Yoe Ta Yoke late on Saturday night.

Dhaka, March 31: Nearly a week after gunning down two Rohingya drug peddlers in the refugee-domination region of Teknaf, the Bangladeshi forces have shot dead another alleged narcotic peddler, identified as Rumana Akter. The 20-year-old is the first Rohingya woman to be killed amid the crackdown against drugs launched by Bangladesh since October last year.

Six people were killed in alleged gunfights with law enforcement agencies in Cox's Bazar, Dhaka and Gazipur early Wednesday, reports news agency UNB.

In Cox's Bazar, four people were killed in separate reported gunfights with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members in Teknaf and Pekua upazilas.

Among the four deceased two were Rohingya drug peddlers and two sea robbers, the BGB and RAB claimed.

The deceased has been identified as Md Sadek, 35, son of Md Jalil; both residents of the Nayapara Rohingya Camp's H block.

Two people from the Rohingya community including a suspected robber were found dead in different areas of Cox’s Bazar in the early hours today.

A police officer killed in Mrauk-U

A police officer was shot dead by two unknown assailants while he was having dinner at a restaurant near a police station in Mrauk-U, Rakhine State, on Saturday night, police said.

Police Inspector Kyaw Kyaw Hla of Tain Nyo police station in Mrauk-U died of gunshot wounds to the head and chest while he was being operated on at hospital, the official said.

YANGON — The Office of the Commander-in-Chief said a Myanmar military major was killed during fighting with the Arakan Army (AA) in northern Rakhine State’s Buthidaung Township Friday night, near where the rebel group killed 13 border police officers in early January.

Brig. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, a spokesman with the office, identified the dead officer as Maj. Aung Ko Nyein.

Armed assailants shot dead one Rohingya paramedic and injured a computer operator at Muchuni camp of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Friday evening apparently for sharing information about Ansar camp looting suspect Nurul Alam who was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion earlier in the day.

The police discovered the body of Rohingya paramedic Mohamed Hamid, 41, in the forest of the nearby hilly area hours after the sympathisers of Nurul Alam kidnapped him and shot at computer operator Hasan Ali at Muchuni camp of Nayapara at around 7:00pm.
