One Rohingya shot dead, another injured

 Staff Correspondent | Published: 00:40, Feb 23,2019

Armed assailants shot dead one Rohingya paramedic and injured a computer operator at Muchuni camp of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Friday evening apparently for sharing information about Ansar camp looting suspect Nurul Alam who was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion earlier in the day.

The police discovered the body of Rohingya paramedic Mohamed Hamid, 41, in the forest of the nearby hilly area hours after the sympathisers of Nurul Alam kidnapped him and shot at computer operator Hasan Ali at Muchuni camp of Nayapara at around 7:00pm.

‘The police on receiving information rushed to the spot and dispatched Hasan to the district hospital, while the body of Hamid was found later at night,’ said Teknaf-Ukhia circle additional police superintendent Nihad Adnan Taian.

The police official said sympathisers of slain Nurul Alam carried out an attack at the dispensary of Hamid, who was better known as ‘Doctor Hamid’, and took him to nearby forest area.

He suspected that Nurul Alam’s cohorts, as part of their revenge for sharing information about Nurul Alam, picked him and killed him.

Later, on information, Teknaf police team rushed to the spot and recovered Hamid’s body and sent it to the district hospital.

Nurul Alam is said to have been involved in, or an organiser of, a number of serious crimes committed in the region since 2016, including murder and looting, especially the incident of looting of arms from an Ansar security establishment near the Nayapara Rohingya shelter in Tekhnaf in May 2016. The commander of the Ansar battalion was killed during the incident.

Nurul Alam was killed on Friday morning in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion next to the road near Damdamia of Teknaf.

RAB’s Teknaf commander lieutenant Mirza Shahed Mahtab, however, said that on Friday night a shooting incident took place as a result of ‘infighting’ over who would assume Nurul Alam’s position following his death.

‘We are collecting intelligence and closely monitoring the development,’ said the RAB official.
