Indian police say they have arrested 74 Rohingya refugees for living “illegally” in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in a move activists condemned as an arbitrary crackdown on people fleeing violence.

The members of the mainly Muslim Rohingya community were detained in six towns and cities in the state and 10 of the refugees were juveniles, police said on Monday.

UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has called for early repatriation of Rohingyas by creating a conducive environment.

A resolution in this regard was adopted by consensus at the 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday.

It stressed the need for a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, by creating a conducive environment in Rakhine for repatriation and by ensuring justice and accountability for the persecuted people, the Bangladesh mission in Geneva said.

The resolution of the Rohingya crisis appears to have met a dead end. Quite predictably, yet another round of questionable repatriation efforts has stalled. With dwindling financial commitment, agencies tasked to look after the refugees are finding it extremely difficult to make ends meet. Squalid living conditions in camps compounded by restrictions on freedom of movement, reduced supply of rations, deteriorating law and order situation coupled with absence of education, skills development and work opportunities, and protracted uncertainty of repatriation have taken a huge toll on the refugees, both physically and psychologically. While some have resigned to such a reality, others, particularly the young ones, are looking for opportunities to escape the fenced camp life and Bhasan Char. Data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows that in 2022 alone, more than 3,500 Rohingya tried to undertake perilous journeys through the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. This is a 360 percent increase from the previous year.

Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are demanding to be repatriated to Myanmar so that they can leave the squalid camps they have lived in since fleeing a brutal military crackdown in their homeland in 2017.

More than a million Rohingya have been crammed into the camps in southeastern Bangladesh, the world’s largest refugee settlement. Most fled the crackdown by Myanmar’s military almost six years ago, although some have been there for longer.

The United Nations refugee agency said Wednesday that conditions in Myanmar’s Rakhine state were not favorable for the safe return of 1,000 Rohingya from Bangladesh whom Myanmar wants to repatriate under a China-mediated program.

A delegation from Myanmar arrived in the Bangladeshi border town of Teknaf on Wednesday to begin interviewing Rohingya in an effort to clear their return to Rakhine, from where they fled following a brutal 2017 military crackdown.

It has been over five years since the Myanmar military has launched its genocidal campaign against the Rohingya in Rakhine State that drove out more than 800,000 Rohingya to the Bangladesh border. The same military has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity against other ethnic and religious minorities including mass killings, rape and gang rape, torture, forced displacement, arbitrary arrests and detention, and burning of villages to ashes. They continue to enjoy blanket impunity fueled by international community’s apathy and inability to hold them accountable.

At least 184 Rohingya refugees, including many women and children, landed in Indonesia’s westernmost province on Monday, officials said, after they were dropped at sea by boat and made to swim ashore.

Thousands of the mostly Rohingya Muslims, heavily persecuted in Myanmar, risk their lives each year on long and expensive sea journeys, often in poor-quality boats, in an attempt to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.
