Shukkur, a muslim rohingya, alleges he was taken inside a building and beaten by christian Rohingya in Kutupalong refugee camp, 26th January, 2020.

On the night of 26th January, violence broke out in Bangladesh’s Kutupalong refugee camp between christian and muslim Rohingya. As a result, several christians required immediate hospitalisation, and seventeen christian families within Kutupalong have been removed to the transit camp ( a transit centre where refugees stay prior to allocation to a particular camp). Tensions have long simmered between the small christian community (approximately 1500 strong), and their muslim compatriots. Occasionally these tensions spill over into violence. According to the christians, this episode is the worst in the history of Rohingya christian/muslim relations.

A Rohingya activist has told Radio Islam the Independent Commission of Enquiry (ICOE) report is to “protect criminals from prosecution”. A commission set up to investigate the 2017 crackdown in Rakhine led hundreds of thousands of mostly Muslim Rohingya to flee Myanmar.

The report released on Monday to the country’s president Aung San Suu Kyi concludes that while some soldiers probably committed war crimes there was no genocide.

The report comes a few days before the United Nations' top court is set to rule on whether to impose urgent measures to stop the alleged continuing genocide in Myanmar.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Nay San Lwin says the release of the report’s findings is a "blatant PR exercise to deflect attention from the International Court and that the security forces are trying to get away from being prosecuted for genocide.

“As Myanmar is not a signatory of the Rome Statute, the International Criminal Court cannot also sue Myanmar criminals for these cases or these crimes. That is basically the report, to protect the criminals from prosecution.”

The four-member commission included two international representatives and was led by Rosario Manalo, a former deputy foreign minister of the Philippines. Lwin says Manalo has a friendship with Myanmar.

“We can see clearly that the relationship between them is friendly. They have a very good friendship and she was ready to cover-up all the crimes committed by the general that is why she was convinced to write this report.” The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to announce on Thursday its ruling on a case filed by Gambia against Myanmar on the persecution of the Rohingya.

One year ago this week, the government of Myanmar signed an understanding with the United Nations that would pave the way for hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees to return home from camps in southern Bangladesh. But the UN says, no family has volunteered to return. Ever since the mass exodus of the Rohingya began in August 2017, the Burmese government and the military have received universal condemnation for their failure to stop the violence. The government, led by the Nobel Laureate Aung Saan Suu Kyi, says that the Rohingya are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and have been involved in attacks against the Burmese military. But in recent months the government has been cooperating with aid agencies to encourage the refugees to return. Does that indicate a change of heart? And if so, should the West reward Myanmar by ending its diplomatic isolation? And what does this crisis say about Myanmar’s democratic transition?
