Key human trafficker dies in jail

Lt Gen Manas Kongpan, a convict in the country's largest human-trafficking case, died of heart attack at Medical Correctional Hospital on Wednesday night.

Sources said that Lt Gen Manas, a former army adviser and native of the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, had a heart attack while exercising on the eight floor of the hospital. He was pronounced dead at around 8pm on Wednesday.

Earlier he had had hypertension, high cholesterol and bradycardia and been admitted to the hospital.

Indonesia urges ASEAN to quickly appoint envoy for Myanmar

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s foreign minister on Wednesday urged the Association of Southeast Asia Nations to immediately appoint a special envoy on Myanmar in response to its military coup, and reiterated a call for the safety of civilians as the ruling junta cracks down on opposition.

After holding talks with EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell in Jakarta, Retno Marsudi said Indonesia is continuing to communicate with the ASEAN chair and other member countries following their demand for an immediate end to killings and the release of political detainees in Myanmar.

Myanmar's National Unity Government has pledged to comply with the directives of the International Court of Justice, which last year ordered the country to prevent any acts of genocide against the Rohingyas in Rakhine State.

"The National Unity Government (NUG) is taking every step to cooperate with the International Court of Justice, the world's highest court, and, by that, to ensure that we comply with Myanmar's international legal obligations," Dr Sasa, union minister of international cooperation and spokesperson of Myanmar's shadow government, said in a statement yesterday.

Indonesia's foreign minister called on Wednesday on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to immediately name an envoy to troubled Myanmar, more than a month after the bloc agreed steps to try to end turmoil after a military coup.

ASEAN is leading the main diplomatic effort on Myanmar since the Feb. 1 coup plunged it into chaos, with hundreds of killings by security forces, thousands jailed, daily protests, paralysing strikes and spreading conflict in border regions.

Several thousand Rohingya refugees have staged “unruly” protests against living conditions on a cyclone-prone island off Bangladesh where they were moved from vast camps on the mainland, police said.

Since December, Bangladesh has shifted 18,000 out of a planned 100,000 refugees to the low-lying silt island of Bhashan Char from the Cox’s Bazar region, where around 850,000 people live in squalid and cramped conditions.

Flaring conflicts between military and ethnic groups make bad situation worse

BANGKOK -- A bitter tide of internally displaced persons, or IDPs, is washing up along the historically fractious Myanmar-Thailand border as fighting spreads into new areas.

Over 50,000 people from some 150 villages were reported to have fled their homes around Loikaw and Demoso in the north of Kayah State and Shan State's southerly Pekon township after fighting erupted on May 21.

Myanmar's military used artillery and helicopters on Monday against anti-junta militias in the country's east, witnesses and rebels said, forcing residents to flee and join thousands of others displaced by recent fighting in the region.

Residents of Kayah state bordering Thailand said the military was firing artillery from positions inside the state capital Loikaw into Demoso, about 14.5 km (9 miles) away, where a People's Defence Force said it had attacked troops and was coming under heavy fire.

ရိုဟင်ဂျာအရေးအတွက် ၁၉၈၂ နိုင်ငံသားဥပဒေကို NUG ပြန်သုံးသပ်မည်

ဖေဖော်ဝါရီ ၁ နောက်ပိုင်း အာဏာသိမ်းစစ်ကောင်စီ၏ ပြစ်မှုများကို ICJ တရားရုံး၌ စီရင်ခွင့်ရရန် NUG က မျှော်လင့်ထားသည်။

၂၀၁၇ အောက်တိုဘာ ၁၉ ရက်နေ့က ဘင်္ဂလားဒေ့ရှ်နိုင်ငံဘက်သို့ ထွက်ပြေးခိုလှုံရသော ရိုဟင်ဂျာဒုက္ခသည်များ (ဓာတ်ပုံ - REUTERS)

  ရိုဟင်ဂျာအရေးနှင့် ပတ်သက်၍ ရပ်တည်ချက်ထုတ်ဖော်ပြောကြားရန် ဖိအားပေးခံနေရသည့် အမျိုးသားညီ ညွတ်ရေးအစိုးရ (NUG) က ၁၉၈၂ နိုင်ငံသားဖြစ်မှုဥပဒေကို ပြန်လည်သုံးသပ်မည်ဖြစ်ကြောင်း ယမန်နေ့ (ဇွန် ၃) တွင် ထုတ်ပြန်ကြေညာလိုက်သည်။
