‘Feeling like prisoners’: The plight of Rohingya refugees today

Five years ago, a violent campaign by security forces in Myanmar sparked a mass exodus of about 730,000 Rohingya, who – carrying their belongings on their backs and sometimes crowding onto makeshift bamboo and jerry-can rafts – fled in search of safety. Most headed to neighbouring Bangladesh.

In early January, a boat with 185 Rohingya refugees washed ashore on the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province. They had spent weeks at sea in desperate conditions, fleeing cramped and overcrowded camps in Bangladesh in search of a better life. More than half were women and children.

Sadly, they are far from alone. Since November last year, at least three more boats have landed in Aceh after similarly perilous journeys, carrying hundreds of refugees, with at least 20 people dying at sea. According to UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), thousands of Rohingya, including women and children, resorted to perilous boat journeys in 2022.

The head of a Rohingya organization urgently called for the U.N. Security Council to prevent what it described as genocide against the Rohingya in Myanmar.

Tun Khin, president of the Burmese Rohingya Organization UK (BROUK), told VOA that the Rohingya in Rakhine state, Myanmar's far west region, continue to face a genocidal program that puts their very survival at risk.

Tens of thousands of Rohingya people were displaced between August and late September and the evidence points to a repeat of the conditions that culminated in the atrocities of 2016-17, when hundreds of thousands of Rohingya were driven from the country.

The Rohingya continue to face a genocide that puts their very survival at risk, the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) said in a new report released 2 November.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered provisional measures to prevent ongoing genocide against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. However, a new report by the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK exposes how the Burmese military and other organisations are ignoring the provisional measures and that genocide is ongoing. It is the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to uphold the ruling of the UN court, but it is failing to do so.

Rohingya genocide: Facebook faces massive $200 bn legal action in UK, US 

 

Lawyers in the UK and the US on Monday initiated coordinated legal campaigns against Facebook, now known as Meta, on behalf of Rohingya Muslims for its alleged role in facilitating the genocide perpetrated by the Myanmar regime and extremist civilians against the Rohingya people.  

 

According to the lawyers, Facebook contributed to the 2017 genocide of Rohingya Muslims by allowing hate speech against the persecuted minority to be propagated in Myanmar. The United Nations had described the violence as "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

While the military junta continues its scorched earth offensives, particularly in Chin State, Sagaing Region, and Karenni State, a missed deadline to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding steps that Myanmar has taken to prevent ongoing genocide against the Rohingya reminds the world that the military’s brutal violence we see today did not begin with its illegal coup attempt of the 1st of February. The ongoing persecution of the Rohingya, highlighted by civil society organizations, should have been a tipping point to catalyze a more effective, coordinated international response.

၂၀၁၇ ခုနှစ်က ရခိုင်ပြည်နယ်မှာ စစ်တပ်ရဲ့နယ်မြေရှင်းလင်းမှုတွေအတွင်း ဆိုးဝါးတဲ့ လူ့အခွင့်အရေးကျူးလွန်မှု တွေက လူမျိုးတုံး ရှင်းလင်းသတ်ဖြတ်ရာရောက်တယ်လို့ဆိုပြီး ဗြိတိန်နိုင်ငံအခြေစိုက် မြန်မာရိုဟင်ဂျာများအဖွဲ့ BROUK နဲ့ ကျူးလွန်မှုတွေ ခံခဲ့ရတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ အမျိုးသမီး ၆ ဦးကမြန်မာအကြီးအကဲတွေ အပေါ်တရားစွဲ ထားပါ တယ်။  ကျူးလွန်ခဲ့တယ်ဆိုတဲ့ အချက်တွေဟာ ပြင်းထန်ဆိုးဝါးလှတဲ့အတွက် စုံစမ်းစစ်ဆေးဖို့ လက်ခံလိုက်တယ် လို့ Buenos Aires မြို့တော်က ရာဇဝတ်မှုဆိုင်ရာ ပြည်ထောင်စုတရားရုံးက ပြောကြားပြီးလက်ခံလိုက်ပါတယ်။ ကာကွယ်ရေးဦးစီချုပ် ဗိုလ်ချုပ်မှူးကြီးမင်းအောင်လှိုင်အပါအဝင်ကျူးလွန်ခဲ့ချိန်ကတာဝန်ရှိတဲ့မြန်မာခေါင်းဆောင် တွေအပေါ်တရားစွဲထားတဲ့ အမှုကို ခုလိုလက်ခံလိုက်တာဟာ ရိုဟင်ဂျာတွေအတွက်တင် မဟုတ်ဘဲ မြန်မာတနိုင်ငံ လုံးအတွက် ထူးခြားအရေးကြီးတယ်လို့ တရားစွဲတဲ့ဗြိတိန်နိုင်ငံအခြေစိုက်မြန်မာရိုဟင်ဂျာများအဖွဲ့ဥက္ကဋ္ဌဦးထွန်းခင် က ဗွီအိုအေ မြန်မာပိုင်းကို ခုလိုပြောပါတယ်။

“ဖေဖေါ်ဝါရီလ ၁ ရက်နေ့ကတည်းက ဒီစစ်တပ်ကနေ တနိုင်ငံလုံးမှာ ဒီလို သတ်ဖြတ်မှုတွေသူတို့လုပ်ပြီးတော့ impunity ဆိုတဲ့ ကင်းလွတ်ခွင့်တွေကိုရနေတယ်။ အဲဒီအတွက်ကြောင့် ဒါက တကယ်ကို အရေးကြီးတဲ့အနေ အ ထားတခုပါ။ ကျနော်တို့ ရိုဟင်ဂျာအတွက်သက်သက်မဟုတ်ဘူး။ ကျနော် ဒီနေရာမှာပြောချင်တာက ကျနော်တို့ နိုင် ငံသူနိုင်ငံသားအားလုံး စစ်တပ်ရဲ့နှိပ်ကွပ်မှုကိုခံနေရတဲ့ နိုင်ငံသူနိုင်ငံသားအားလုံးအတွက် တရားမျှတမှုရဖို့ ဒီ အာ ဂျင်တီးနားရဲ့တရားခွင် စုံစမ်းစစ်ဆေးမှုက အရေးကြီးတဲ့ အခန်းကဏ္ဍမှာရှိတယ်။ ပြီးတော့ ဒီအမှုက ကျနော်တို့ အ တွက်တင် အကျိုးရှိမှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။ တနိုင်ငံလုံးအတွက်အကျိုးရှိမှာပါ။ အဲဒီအတွက်ကြောင့် ဒါက တော်တော်လေး အရေးကြီးပါတယ်။ ကျနော်တို့အတွက် မျှော်လင့်ချက်တခုတင်မဟုတ်ဘူး။ ကျနော်တို့နိုင်ငံမှာ ဖိနှိပ်မှုကိုခံနေရတဲ့ လူနည်းစုတိုင်းရင်းသားတွေ၊ တခြားတိုင်းရင်းသားတွေ၊ ရိုဟင်ဂျာအပါအဝင် ကျန်တဲ့တိုင်းရင်းသားလူနည်းစုတွေ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံမှာ ရန်ကုန်၊ မန္တလေး၊ စစ်ကိုင်းတိုင်းတွေမှာ နေ့စဉ်ခံနေရတဲ့လူတွေအားလုံးအတွက် အရေးကြီးတဲ့ case တခုဖြစ်တယ်လို့ ကျနော် ပြောချင်ပါတယ်။”

ဒီအမှုကို ရှေ့နှစ်ဆန်းပိုင်းမှာ စတင်စစ်ဆေးနိုင်မယ်လို့ ခန့်မှန်းကြောင်း ဦးထွန်းခင်က ပြောပါတယ်။ အမှုအတွက် သူတို့ ဘက်က အတတ်နိုင်ဆုံး ပြင်ဆင်ထားပြီး နောက်ထပ် အထောက်အထားတွေရရှိအောင်နဲ့ အစုလိုက်အပြုံ လိုက် သတ်ဖြတ် မှုတွေရှိခဲ့တဲ့ ရွာတွေကလုပ်ရပ်တွေအတွက် တာဝန်ရှိတဲ့ စစ်တပ်အကြီးအကဲတွေကို ဖော်ထုတ် ဖို့လည်း လုပ်သွားမယ်လို့ပြောပါတယ်။ မြန်မာစစ်တပ်ကတော့ ရိုဟင်ဂျာဆိုတဲ့ အသုံးအနှုန်းကိုလက်မခံသလို ခုလို တရားစွဲတာတွေကို အသိအမှတ်မပြုဘူးလို့ ပြောကြားထားပါတယ်။ တကယ်လို့ စစ်တပ်ဘက်က ပူးပေါင်းဆောင် ရွက်မှုမလုပ်ရင် တရားစွဲတာ ထိရောက်မှုရှိပါ့မလားလို့ ဦးထွန်းခင်ကို မေးတဲ့အခါ သူကခုလိုဖြေပါတယ်။

“ကျနော်တို့တွေ့ရသလောက်က ဒီလို ရာဇဝတ်မှုကျူးလွန်တဲ့ကောင်တွေက ဘယ်တော့မှ လုပ်တယ်ဆိုတာလည်း မပြောဘူး။ ပြီးတော့ ဒီဟာတွေကို ဂရုမစိုက်တဲ့ပုံစံတော့ ပြပါတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် တရားမျှတမှုရှာတဲ့နေရာမှာတော့ နောက်ဆုံးတော့ သူတို့ ဒီတရားခွင်ပေါ်မှာတော့ ပေါ်လာရမှာပဲ၊ ဘယ်လိုပဲငြင်းငြင်း။ အမှန်တရားတခုရဖို့ ကျနော် တို့ အစွမ်းကုန်ကြိုးစားသွားမယ်။ တကယ်လို့ ရာဇဝတ်မှုကျူးလွန်ထားတဲ့ ဒီစစ်တပ်ကလူတွေ၊ ဗိုလ်ချုပ်တွေ မလာ ဘူးဆိုရင် ကျနော်တို့က သူတို့ကို interpol နဲ့ ဖမ်းဝရမ်းထုတ်ဖို့ အလားအလာရှိပါတယ် နောက်ဆုံးမှာတော့။ အဲလိုအနေအထားအထိ ကျနော်တို့သွားမှာပါ။”

နိုင်ငံတကာဥပဒေအရ လူ့အခွင့် ချိုးဖောက် ကျူးလွန်မှုတွေ ဆိုးဆိုးဝါးဝါး ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်ဆိုရင် တရားစွဲပိုင်ခွင့်ရှိတဲ့အ တွက် အာဂျင်တီးနားနိုင်ငံမှာ အမှုဖွင့် တရားစွဲတာဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ အခုလို မြန်မာနိုင်ငံအပေါ်တခြားနိုင်ငံတခုမှာတရား စွဲတာက သက်ရောက်မှုတွေ ရှိနိုင်တယ်လို့ မြန်မာ့အရေး လေ့လာနေတဲ့ ဒေါက်တာခင်ဇော်ဝင်းက ခုလို သုံးသပ် ပါတယ်။

“ဒါတွေက အကျယ်ကျယ်သွားနိုင်တာကို ထည့်တွက်ဖို့ လိုနေပြီ။ ဒီကိစ္စမှာ အီရော အီရောလုပ်မရဘူး။ ရာဇဝတ်မှု တွေကို ကျူးလွန်ထားတာပါ။ ကျူးလွန်ဆဲပါပဲ။ အဲဒါကြောင့် တခုခုလုပ်ကြပါလို့ ပြောတာနဲ့ တူတူပဲ။”

၂၀၁၇ ခုနှစ်က ရခိုင်ပြည်နယ်မှာ လူမျိုးရေး ဘာသာရေးအခြေခံတဲ့ ပဋိပက္ခတွေ ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပြီးနောက် စစ်တပ်ရဲ့နယ်မြေ ရှင်း လင်းမှုတွေအတွင်း ဆိုးဝါးတဲ့ လူ့အခွင့်အရေးချိုးဖောက်မှုတွေရှိခဲ့တယ်လို့ ကုလသမဂ္ဂနဲ့ လူ့အခွင့်အရေး အဖွဲ့ တွေက သုံးသပ်ထားကြပါတယ်။ အဲဒီနယ်မြေရှင်းလင်းမှုတွေအတွင်း ရိုဟင်ဂျာ ၇ သိန်းလောက် အိမ်နီးချင်း ဘင်္ဂ လားဒေရှ့်နိုင်ငံဘက်ကို ထွက်ပြေးခဲ့ကြရပါတယ်။

Argentine court to hear Myanmar Rohingya genocide case

Argentina’s judiciary has agreed to open a genocide case brought by Rohingya victims of atrocities committed by Myanmar’s military, in a move hailed by victims and their advocates as a historic step toward bringing the country’s ruling generals to justice.

 The case was brought in Buenos Aires by a UK-based Rohingya group and six female survivors of the military’s 2017 crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, where security forces killed thousands, committed rapes and drove about 750,000 members of the long-persecuted minority into Bangladesh.
