မြန်မာနိုင်ငံမှာ ၂၀၂၁ခုနှစ် ပြည်သူ့ကာကွယ်ရေးတပ်ဖွဲ့ (PD)တွေကို စတင်ဖွဲ့စည်းခဲ့ချိန်မှာ PDF တွေကို စစ် ကောင် စီတပ်တွေက အချိန်တိုလေးအတွင်းမှာ နှိမ်နင်းပစ်လိမ့်မယ်လို့ လူတော်တော်များများက ထင်ခဲ့ကြပါ တယ်။ လူငယ်လက်နက်ကိုင်တွေရဲ့ အလျှင်စလို စုဖွဲ့မှုမျိုးပဲလို့ ထင်မှတ်ခဲ့ကြပါတယ်။

Myanmar’s Anti-Junta Resistance Inflicting Rising Casualties: Report

Nearly seven months since the coup, the armed resistance to the military junta continues to grow and expand.

A civilian militia group in Myanmar claims that it killed around 50 soldiers and injured a number more in a series of landmine attacks in Magwe Region last week, the latest sign of rising resistance to the military junta that seized power in February.

According to a report in The Irrawaddy, which cited a representative from the People’s Defense Force (PDF) in Gangaw township, the casualties stemmed from two incidents. The first took place on August 19, when a vehicle carrying junta soldiers, one of a convoy of six, triggered a landmine planted by the civilian resistance on the Gangaw-Kale Highway. At least 20 soldiers were killed in the explosion and many others were injured, according to The Irrawaddy.

The idea of a Federal Army for Myanmar is as old as the country’s struggle for democracy. The vision is a part of the larger picture of decentralization and democratization of the multiethnic nation of 54 million and was first seriously floated in 1988 as a counterweight to Tatmadaw and to rally the support of ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) during 8888 Uprising. The idea has recently received unprecedented momentum following the ousting of NLD-led civilian government on February 1, 2021. The formation of an EAO-supported People’s Defense Force (PDF) that amalgamates the Bamar youth with anti-junta ethnic rebels has sparked new optimism in this regard. Spontaneous attacks from civilian resistance fighters and other similar groups, such as Taze People’s Comrades, Kalay Civil Army and Chinland Defence Force have also contributed significantly to this growing interest.

If Myanmar’s security landscape was devilishly complicated before the February coup d’etat, the growing national-level armed resistance to the military-formed State Administration Council (SAC) junta has rendered it almost incomprehensible.

In recent weeks, veteran ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) such as the Karen National Union (KNU) and Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) have ramped up attacks on the military, or Tatmadaw. Peasant revolts using flintlock rifles and muskets in the hills of Chin state have likewise seen locally raised defense forces inflict major casualties on army units.
