Regional bloc has the power to help end military atrocities that have killed thousands

This past Monday, the European Union extended its ban on selling arms to Myanmar while also prolonging sanctions against high-ranking officials suspected of perpetrating atrocities against the country’s Rohingya Muslims.

The sanctions are aimed at preventing the export of arms and equipment “that might be used for internal repression”, the EU announced.

EU extends Myanmar arms embargo, other sanctions for a year

BRUSSELS — The European Union is prolonging by a year an embargo on any arms that could be used in security crackdowns in Myanmar as well as sanctions against 14 top military and border officials.

EU headquarters said Monday that based on an annual review the restrictive measures will be extended until April 30, 2020.

The travel bans and asset freezes were imposed on the 14 officials “for serious human rights violations, or association with such violations” against Myanmar’s Muslim Rohingya minority.

Myanmar’s military launched a brutal counterinsurgency campaign in the western state of Rakhine in 2017, forcing more than 700,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh.

The EU also refuses to cooperate with, or provide training to, the Myanmar military.

Senators called Wednesday for the United States to slap sanctions on Myanmar's army chief, saying more needed to be done to bring accountability over the campaign against the Rohingya.

In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, the four senators said Myanmar has shown "no credible signs of progress" despite widespread international condemnation of the killings and sexual violence against members of the mostly Muslim minority.
