Deportation of refugees is legally and morally problematic

In Januarys, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called for a report from India on the deportation of a group of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar in October 2018. India’s repatriation of the refugees contravenes international principles on refugee law as well as domestic constitutional rights.

Earlier this month, India sparked panic among its long-suffering Rohingya refugee population by deporting a family of five to their home country of Myanmar, where they will most certainly face human rights violations and imprisonment. This expulsion came on the heels of the controversially forced repatriation of seven Rohingya men last October.

UN asks Saudi Arabia not to deport Rohingya

A top UN official on Friday urged Saudi Arabia not to deport members of the persecuted Rohingya community to Bangladesh but instead to grant them refugee status, Anadolu Agency reports.

“I am dismayed by Saudi Arabia’s recent deportation of 13 Rohingya to Bangladesh,” said Yanghee Lee, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, at a news briefing in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.

More Rohingyas are waiting to enter Bangladesh through Brahmanbaria’s Kasba border from India amid fears of deportation to Myanmar.


“As many as 31 Rohingya women, men and children have gathered on the border,” Major Md Shafiq of the Border Guards Bangladesh told reporters.

The BGB officer said a decision would be taken after a flag meeting with India’s border guards.
