Two Reuters journalists who are currently serving seven-year prison sentences in Myanmar are to be awarded a prize for press freedom by the U.N.’s cultural organization.

The 2019 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize, which honors the defense and promotion of press freedom, is being awarded to Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo as a tribute to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression, according to a press release from UNESCO. The two journalists had been working on stories about a military crackdown and alleged human rights violations in Rakhine state in Myanmar when they were arrested. They were also named as TIME’s Person of the Year, along with three other journalists and a news organization, last December.

Six arrested with 85,000 yaba pills

Police in separate drives arrested six people including three Rohingyas and seized 85,000 yaba
tablets from their possession in Chattogram city on Wednesday night and yesterday morning.

The three Rohingyas were identified as Abu Taher, 22, Md Ismail, 28, and Md Mubarak, 27, hailing from
Teknaf Jadimura Rohingya Camp. They were arrested with 50,000 yaba tablets from Bridge Ghat area.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted the drive around 10pm on Wednesday, said Md Mohsin,
officer-in-charge(OC) of Kotwali Police Station.

Other arrestees -- Md Mamun, 24, Jubaer, 18, and Abu Bakar Siddique, 20 -- are residents of the city's
Firingi Bazar area. They had 35,000 yaba tablets while they were going to Chattogram from Teknaf on
a microbus at 8am, said OC Mohsin.

“During primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they carried the yaba tablets from Teknaf to
sell those in Chattogram city and other parts of the country,” he added.

Finland wants global pressure on Myanmar for quick Rohingya repatriation

Finland ambassador to Bangladesh (non-resident) Nina Vaskunlahti on Thursday emphasised the need for continued global pressure on Myanmar for the quick repatriation of displaced Rohingyas.

‘The world community will have to continue pressure on Myanmar government to take their citizens back from Bangladesh,’ she said.

The envoy made the remarks when she met prime minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Former prime minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt has expressed her concern that a whole generation of Rohingyas could be lost if the absence of Rohingya refugee children in the education system is continued.

She made the remarks while visiting the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar on April 6 and 7, a press release of Save the Children said today.

Bangladesh has finally allowed the Independent Commission of Enquiry (ICOE) to visit the country. According to a press release on the ICOE’s website, the Bangladeshi foreign minister has agreed in principle to meet with the commission next month. What is unclear—and frankly, this must be the crux of the issue—is whether Bangladeshi authorities will allow the ICOE to conduct evidence gathering in Cox’s Bazar. No information on this is available on the ICOE’s website.
