Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for a significant increase in international assistance for Rohingya refugees sheltering in Bangladesh, expressing serious concern over a sharp decline in global funding for the crisis.

The appeal was made during a meeting with UNHCR Country Representative Ivo Freijsen at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday.

The two sides discussed the current situation of the Rohingya population in Bangladesh, international financing, and the prospects for safe repatriation.

Minister Salahuddin emphasized that despite being one of the most densely populated nations in the world, Bangladesh extended shelter to a massive number of Rohingya refugees purely on humanitarian grounds.

He warned, however, that with global attention increasingly diverted by conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine and tensions between Israel and Iran, the Rohingya crisis risks fading from the international agenda.

The minister noted that due to Bangladesh's socioeconomic and geographic constraints, expanding the capacity of existing refugee camps is extremely difficult.

He urged the United Nations and UNHCR to play a more assertive role in keeping the Rohingya issue at the forefront of international discussions and called for stronger multilateral engagement to ensure increased humanitarian funding for the refugees.

Stressing the importance of a durable solution, Salahuddin highlighted the need for the safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar as the only sustainable path forward.

During the meeting, UNHCR Representative Ivo Freijsen warmly congratulated the minister on assuming his new portfolio and invited him to attend the upcoming presentation of the Rohingya Joint Response Plan on May 20.

Senior officials from the Home Ministry's Political Division were also present at the meeting.
