Former prime minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt has expressed her concern that a whole generation of Rohingyas could be lost if the absence of Rohingya refugee children in the education system is continued.

She made the remarks while visiting the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar on April 6 and 7, a press release of Save the Children said today.

“…Many children are still out of the coverage of general education. I am worried that a whole generation of Rohingyas will be lost if the absence of children in the education system is continued,” said Helle, also the chief executive of International Development Organization Save the Children.

During the visit, she also said that 18 months ago she visited Cox's Bazar when thousands of Rohingyas were entering Bangladesh every day and she was moved seeing the appalled condition of the children.

Expressing her gratitude towards Bangladesh government, she said, “Save the Children stands shoulder to shoulder with Bangladesh in responding to the needs of the Rohingya while they are in Bangladesh.

“Together, we can uphold the dignity and rights of Rohingya refugees and the host community in Bangladesh while pursuing international justice for the crimes committed against the Rohingya in Myanmar,” she added.

On the two day’s tour, along with Save the Children’s Bangladesh Country Director Mark Pierce, Helle visited various activities of Save the Children
