Four UNICEF schools for Rohingya children in refugee camps in Bangladesh have been destroyed in a fire, officials said Tuesday, with the UN children's agency calling it arson.
It was unclear who might attack the schools, which were empty at the time, but the security situation in the camps housing around a million people has worsened in recent months.

From the very moment that the Bashan Char project was announced, the plan to relocate Rohingya refugees to these improved accommodations has been met with strong criticism from the international community. But now, after two batches of refugees have been relocated, and a third batch of 2,000 people all set to be moved by the end of this month, it would seem that the critics were mistaken, and that Bhashan Char is indeed a great improvement over the Cox’s Bazar camps. As a senior Navy officer involved in the relocation commented: “So far so good.”

A book, narrating the recent Rohingya crisis and ways to resolve it, was unveiled at a programme in the AR Mallick lecture hall of history department of Jahangirnagar University on Sunday.
JU history department professor Lutful Elahi wrote the book, titled ‘Rohingya and Bangladesh’, as part of his research work on ‘The lifestyle and origin of Rohingya’.
History department organised the event where Lutful Elahi presented the key-note paper and replied different queries on his book.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller has said Bangladesh-US relations will only get stronger under the Biden administration.
"I think the relationship between the US and Bangladesh will only grow from strength to strength. I don't see any major changes at this point," he told UNB in an interview.
US President-elect Joe Biden and his team are now all set to take over office on January 20, 2021.
Ambassador Miller, however, said they will have to see what the new administration's policies are and mentioned that many of the people who will be moving to cabinet positions are well-known to him. "Many of them have real focus on the Indo-Pacific region, especially in South Asia."

In a recent interview with DW, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen said that authorities in Dhaka could provide legal documents to some of the Rohingya that live in Saudi Arabia.
The Muslim Rohingya are an ethnic minority originating in Myanmar's Rakhine state. However, Myanmar refuses to recognize them as citizens. For decades, the Rohingya have fled from persecution to other countries, most of them to neighboring Bangladesh.
Almost 40 years ago, Saudi Arabia took in tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees who were facing persecution in Myanmar. The Saudi government told Dhaka in September 2020 that it "would be helpful" if the refugees were given Bangladeshi passports as the kingdom "doesn't keep stateless people."

Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Issa bin Youssef Al-Duhailan today said they are considering those Rohingyas as Bangladeshis who have been to Saudi Arabia with Bangladeshi passports.
He said a high-level committee has been formed to scrutinise the process.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan who was present at the same programme said the Rohingya issue is a "very old one" and they will look into it in terms of renewal or reissuance of the passports.
"Those who are from Myanmar, are not Bangladeshi citizens... they are citizens of Myanmar," he said. They were speaking at a food distribution event at a Dhaka hotel.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today urged the filmmakers to make films patronizing the saddest stories of Rohingyas for further sensitizing world community about unimaginable atrocities that were committed against an ethnic group.
“An ethnic minority (Rohingya) that are the victims of hatred and enmity in a land of Buddhism (Myanmar) that believe in Ohinsho and Nirvana, self-purification where hatred and killing is unthinkable and against his teaching,” he said.
Dr Momen made the remark while inaugurating the 19th Dhaka International Film Festival organized by the Rainbow Film Society at National Museum in the capital this afternoon.

UN agencies have stepped up efforts to help thousands of Rohingya refugees left without shelter after a devastating fire tore through a crowded refugee camp in south-eastern Bangladesh on Thursday.
WFP Bangladesh A devastating fire broke out on 14 January in Nayapara refugee camp, southern Bangladesh, destroying over 500 shelters.
The fire erupted shortly after midnight on Thursday (local time) in the Nayapara refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, gutting about 550 shelters and 150 shops. A community centre is also said to have been destroyed.
About 3,500 Rohingya refugees, including children, lost their homes and belongings in the blaze, in the middle of winter and the coronavirus pandemic, UN agencies said.
No lives were lost, and the fire was brought under control in a few hours by firefighters, volunteers and refugees.
