In this edition, we’ll be tackling the ruling by the International Criminal Justice (ICJ) to protect Rohingya Muslims and what gives us hope in the face of climate change.

REFLECT: The end is nigh

Between the outbreak of Coronavirus, Kenya’s worst locust infestation in 70 years and the UK-Africa summit settling 90% of energy deals in fossil fuels, you’d be forgiven for catastrophising.

However, it’s the efforts of climate activists like Vanessa Nakate that serve as a shot in the arm to turn despair into resolve. After being unfairly cropped out of a photo with the rest of her white peers at the World Economic Forum in Davos by Associated Press, she hit back against racist reporting of the event. Vanessa started and co-ordinated the first climate strikes in Uganda, tirelessly advocating for how climate change will affect her community.

Divided by hatred but united over the written word, Rohingya Muslim poets in Bangladeshi refugee camps joined Buddhist bards in Myanmar by video link as part of a groundbreaking poetry festival in a country reeling from genocide allegations.

Five Rohingya writers took part in the three-day "Poetry for Humanity" event in Yangon, with three speaking live by video link to a packed room while two had sent pre-recorded readings, fearing their stuttering connection would not hold up.

Since 2017, some 740,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar for neighboring Bangladesh. The mass exodus was provoked, in the words of United Nations investigators, by security forces practicing “ethnic cleansing” and “crimes against humanity” with “genocidal intent.” Now two international tribunals are investigating Myanmar for atrocities committed against the Rohingya, who have lived uneasily among Myanmar’s Buddhist majority since the country’s independence from British rule seven decades ago.

The biggest refugee camps in the world, on a coastal strip in southern Bangladesh, house 1 million Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar in flimsy shacks vulnerable to flooding and deadly encounters with elephants.

Now Bangladesh says it has readied a new, purpose-built refugee settlement complete with concrete housing, flood defences, food warehouses, freshly paved roads, mosques and a solar grid.

The panel of 17 judges at the ICJ on Thursday voted unanimously to order Myanmar to take “all measures within its power” to prevent genocide, which they said the Rohingya remained at serious risk of.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered measures to prevent the genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar (formerly Burma).

The decision comes despite de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi defending her country against the accusations in person last month.

Thousands of Rohingya died and more than 700,000 fled to Bangladesh during an army crackdown in 2017.

The ruling came despite appeals last month by Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi for the International Court of Justice to drop the case amid her denials of genocide by the armed forces that once held the former pro-democracy champion under house arrest for 15 years.
