As Myanmar marked Independence Day on January 4 with formal ceremonies, a national holiday and street games, a very different anniversary passed almost without mention in the country’s west.

Exactly a year earlier, Arakan Army soldiers had staged coordinated attacks on four police stations in northern Rakhine State, killing 13 officers. The attacks have precipitated bloody clashes, mass displacement and human rights violations in Rakhine and neighbouring Chin State.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said there are 1.1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar in Bangladesh, mostly in the refugee camps. 

New Delhi: Keeping in mind security issues, Bangladesh has issued fresh instructions for NGOs and other international organisations working with the Rohingyas, mostly in the Cox's Bazaar area of the country.

SONGKHLA: An illegal Rohingya migrant fleeing a detention camp in Thailand has been arrested in Malaysia.

Thai police said on Thursday Murabaek Suson, 17, was captured by Malaysian authorities in Kedah state and wouldl be sent to Thailand.

Four Rohingya children were killed and six other people injured in an explosion Tuesday in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state, villagers said, though it is unclear whether the blast was caused by a landmine or shelling by the government military or the rebel Arakan Army, which have been engaged in hostilities since late 2018.

The demand for firewood on average has dropped by 80% per household in the Rohingya camps located around the Cox’s Bazar district, a year on from the advent of the refugee crisis in 2017.

Known as the world’s most persecuted ethnic group, the Rohingya have faced persecution and deprivation of their fundamental rights within Myanmar for decades. Effectively denied citizenship under the 1982 Citizenship Law, the Rohingya are one of the world’s largest stateless populations.
