Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Kunming seems to mark a watershed in Beijing’s policy toward the country’s civil war. 


The head of Myanmar’s military junta embarked yesterday on an official visit to China for regional meetings, his first trip to the country since the coup of February 2021.

Myanmar state media reported that Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing will attend summits of the Greater Mekong Subregion and the Ayeyarwady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy during the two-day state visit. He will also join a meeting with counterparts from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a Rohingya man who was carrying locally-made firearm, five rounds of ammunition, and one used cartridge while returning to Cox's Bazar refugee camp from Myanmar, said Lt Col Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, commanding officer of Teknaf 2 Battalion.

The arrest took place early this morning (4 November) in the Naf River's Jhingekhaliarea of Teknaf's Whykong Union.

Thai police arrested a trio suspected people smugglers over the deaths of three Rohingya refugees who suffocated in the back of trucks in Thailand, officers said Saturday.

Three Rohingya refugees died and six were injured after traffickers allegedly packed 26 people who had made their way across the Thai-Myanmar border into two vehicles.

A Thai man accused of leading a human trafficking gang has been arrested along with two accomplices in connection with the smuggling of 26 Rohingya migrants, three of whom died of suffocation in an overcrowded truck, police said on Saturday.

At least six Rohingya died at sea when a boat carrying the fleeing persecuted community members reached Indonesia, authorities in the Southeast Asian nation said Friday.

The boat was also carrying at least 93 other Rohingya who reached the coast of Aceh at around 4 a.m. (2100GMT, Thursday), along the northwest tip of the Sumatra Island, the local English daily Jakarta Globe reported.
