At least 382 Rohingya refugees have been rescued off the coast of Bangladesh after drifting for several days aboard an overcrowded fishing boat.

Officials with Bangladesh’s coast guard said the boat was spotted late Wednesday and brought ashore. Video footage taken by a local journalist showed a crowd of mostly women and children looking emaciated as they were helped off the boat.

The Malaysian authorities should ensure that the 202 Rohingya people found adrift off the country’s coast are spared the risk of mass infection in detention facilities, said Amnesty International Malaysia today.

The group is currently in 14-day quarantine in response to the outbreak of COVID-19.

“The government must ensure adequate protection for these Rohingya people, who are in desperate need of safety from both persecution and illness,” said Preethi Bhardwaj, Amnesty International Malaysia’s Interim Executive Director.

Regional rights body 'Fortify Rights' has called for Malaysia to release detained refugees and prevent arbitrary detention of new arrivals to minimise health risks due to Covid-19.

"Malaysia should take extra precautions now to protect the rights of refugees and refrain from detaining them," said Matthew Smith, chief executive officer of Fortify Rights, in a statement today.

"Detaining refugees after they pass a quarantine and during a pandemic would be irresponsible and inhumane," he said.

LANGKAWI: The 202 Rohingya illegal immigrants arrested in Jalan Pantai Kok, Teluk Nibong, last week are believed to have paid RM2,000 each to a syndicate to smuggle them into Malaysia, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (pix). 

He said their family members who were already in Malaysia would have to pay the syndicate an additional RM15,000 per immigrant if they could be reunited.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — At the tender age of eight, Rafik Shah arrived on Malaysian soil as a Rohingya refugee with his family.

Thirty six years on, and Rafik, fondly known as Ustaz Rafik, has taken it upon himself to help his fellow stateless refugees as they struggle in his second home, especially now with the Covid-19 outbreak forcing the nation into a four-week shutdown.

Makes urgent call for international assistanc  

Save the Children today made an urgent call for international assistance to help Bangladesh meet a surge in demand for ventilators amid the Covid-19 outbreak and to avert a humanitarian disaster in the country.

The call comes at a time when 164 people were found infected with coronavirus, of whom 17 died. There are fears that the numbers would go up in the coming days despite a shutdown across the country since March 26.

PUTRAJAYA, April 6 — The Ministry of Health has confirmed today that around 250 Rohingya refugees who landed at Langkawi, Kedah will be tested for Covid-19, following concerns from the public.
Its director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the refugees, who reached the island’s shores near Langkawi’s Ritz Carlton Hotel early yesterday morning, have already been isolated.

UK announces 21m pounds in virus funds for Bangladesh

The UK has announced around £21 million to support Bangladesh’s efforts to fight the coronavirus outbreak and help preparedness in the Rohingya refugee camps

 
The funds include £7 million to multiple partners, such as UNICEF, WHO and World Bank, to help prepare the national health system, including logistics and supplies of personal protective equipment for health workers, laboratory supplies for testing and oxygen support in hospitals, the British High Commission said in a statement.

Malaysian authorities have detained more than 200 ethnic Rohingya, including five children, after they intercepted a boat off the coast of the northwestern island of Langkawi.

The wooden vessel was found adrift just over one nautical mile (2.2 kilometres) from one of the island's luxury beach resorts on Sunday morning, the Malaysian maritime enforcement agency said in a statement.
