YANGON—A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has advanced legislation in the U.S. Congress to impose new sanctions on the Myanmar military, or Tatmadaw—the latest foreign effort to put pressure on the military in response to the Rohingya crisis in Rakhine State.

YANGON—A photographic art exhibition opening this weekend at Myanmar Deitta with a project presentation will show to the public the results of a cultural and artistic exchange program between Yangon’s all-women photography collective Thuma, and its Dhaka-based equivalent, Kaali.

COX’S BAZAR—Rohingya Muslim refugees in camps in Bangladesh long to go back to their homes in Myanmar but a Bangladeshi official said on Thursday things were still too volatile for a safe return.

More than 700,000 Rohingya crossed into Bangladesh in 2017, according to U.N. agencies, after a crackdown by Myanmar’s military sparked by Rohingya insurgent attacks on the security forces.

Yangon - A Rohingya advocacy group on Wednesday called for the resignation of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres after a UN inquiry found "systemic failure" in its own conduct in Myanmar.

The United Nations (UN) has warned it will pare back aid to thousands of Rohingya Muslims left destitute as Myanmar's government closes camps in Rakhine state, over fears its continued support "risks entrenching segregation".

The European Union (EU) has announced a fund of €18 million (nearly Tk171.5 crore) to help improve resilience among both the Rohingya refugees and the Bangladeshi host communities in Cox's Bazar.

Asean called to toughen Rohingya stance

Human rights groups have called on Asean’s leaders to take a tougher stand on Myanmar’s ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims ahead of today’s [Thursday] summit in Bangkok.

The plight of the persecuted community is expected to be a major topic during the four-day summit of meetings among the 10 leaders, including Myanmar’s embattled State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
