MANILA: Leaders of Asian nations meeting in Manila on Monday skirted around the mass exodus of Rohingya Muslims triggered by Myanmar‘s military crackdown, disappointing human rights groups who were hoping for a tough stand on the humanitarian crisis.

Dhaka, March 31: Nearly a week after gunning down two Rohingya drug peddlers in the refugee-domination region of Teknaf, the Bangladeshi forces have shot dead another alleged narcotic peddler, identified as Rumana Akter. The 20-year-old is the first Rohingya woman to be killed amid the crackdown against drugs launched by Bangladesh since October last year.

Four Rohingyas have been held by Airport Armed Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The incident occurred around 11am on Sunday, said Md Alamgir Hossain, additional superintendent (operations and media) of Airport Armed Police.

THE recent discoveries by police of the bullet-hit body of a 35-year-old Rohingya man near Noyapara Rohingya refugee camp in Teknaf and the body of an 18-year-old Rohingya woman recovered from Balukhali refugee camp in Ukhiya are chilling reminders of deteriorating law and order in the Rohingya refugee camps. On Wednesday, two Rohingya men, both allegedly drug traders, were killed in “shootouts” with the police in Cox's Bazar. Lack of security has become a major concern in the densely populated Rohingya camps where refugees are either becoming the victims or the perpetrators.

An armed clash between Myanmar soldiers and rebel Arakan Army (AA) fighters in a village in Mrauk-U township in western Myanmar’s violence-ridden Rakhine state on Friday left two villagers dead and seven others injured, local residents and a Rakhine lawmaker said.

More than 50 civilians have been killed or are missing due to fighting between the Tatmadaw (military) and Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine State, according to an investigation by the Arakan National Party (ANP).
Led by ANP Vice Chair Daw Aye Nu Sein, a nine-member commission set up on March 20 investigated the fighting in Buthidaung, Rathedaung, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U and Minbya townships.
