The eyes of the international community are on the United States following the Order of 23 January 2020 made by the International Court of Justice regarding the case of The Gambia v. Myanmar in which the Republic of the Union of Myanmar is ordered to protect their ethnic Rohingya minority against genocide. Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded declaring that the case, which saw a panel of 17 judges vote unanimously in making the ruling, was a “distorted picture of the situation.”

On Thursday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a unanimous ruling that ordered Myanmar to “take all measures within its power” to protect its ethnic minority Rohingya population from genocide. The case — against which Myanmar’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, argued unsuccessfully — ended up in front of the ICJ because of a tiny African country thousands of miles away. Here’s what you need to know about this story.

Last week, the United Nations' highest court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) handed down a historic decision in finding Myanmar guilty of "causing irreparable damage to the rights" of its Muslim minority, the Rohingya, ordering its government to take emergency measures to prevent genocide.

Immediately following the international criminal court's verdict, the Aung San Suu Kyi led government responded with typical defiance, claiming "there's been no genocide in Rakhine," while accusing human rights organisations of creating a "distorted picture."

On January 23, 2020, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) indicated provisional measures in the case of The Gambia v. Myanmar. According to a press release issued by the Court, The Gambia requested a series of five provisional measures "to preserve . . . the rights of the Rohingya group in Myanmar, of its members and of The Gambia under the Genocide Convention." To indicate provisional measures, several conditions must be fulfilled. First, the Court must have prima facie jurisdiction over the case. On this point, the Court determined that it had jurisdiction over the case based on a finding that there exists a dispute between the Parties under Article IX of the Genocide Convention and that some of the acts of wrongdoing alleged by The Gambia may fall within the provisions of the Convention (paras. 34-35).

as part of a groundbreaking poetry festival in a country reeling from genocide allegations.

Five Rohingya writers took part in the three-day “Poetry for Humanity” event in Yangon, with three speaking live by video link to a packed room while two had sent pre-recorded readings, fearing that their stuttering connection would not hold up. They drew applause for verses on the bloodshed that forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee their homes in northern Rakhine state – and also for their resilienc.

On Jan. 27, 1945, a scouting party from a column of Soviet Red Army soldiers who were marching through Poland on their way to Krakow happened upon a strange, half-destroyed industrial complex just outside the town of Oświęcim, better known as Auschwitz. AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU, Poland — They wore scarves emblazoned with their prisoner numbers, the same ones tattooed on their arms. Many were frail, walking only with the support of friends or relatives

And as they slowly made their way, one by one, to what had been the wall of death, where thousands of prisoners were lined up for summary execution, it was a vivid reminder that before long the last eyewitnesses to the crimes that took place in Auschwitz will be gone.

Myanmar ruling sets important precedent for genocide prevention

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled unanimously on January 23 that the Rohingya minority in Myanmar remains at serious risk of genocide, and that Myanmar must take “all measures within its power” to prevent it. The ruling was right for the Myanmar case, and also sets an important precedent for the prevention of genocide in other conflicts.

S. Korea to help Rohingya aiding 50,000 radios and related education

The South Korean government says it will give 50,000 radios to Rohingya Muslims resettling in Myanmar.
These radios are aimed at helping them access information on administrative, health and education matters, among others.
Seoul has invested 500-thousand U.S. dollars to help some 730-thousand Rohingyas, becoming the first country to participate in ASEAN's new support program for the minority group's resettlement.
Korea has been providing the Rohingyas over 16 million dollars via other international organizations. Reporter :
