UNITED NATIONS, Jan 20 2020 (IPS) - University of California professor E. Tendayi Achiume, who is a United Nations Special Rapporteur, has recently offered her assistance to the Indian Supreme Court in a long hearing about India deporting Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

BANGKOK — As the leader of China, Xi Jinping, touched down in Myanmar on Friday, his two-day visit is designed to celebrate Beijing’s expanding presence in the region, both as an economic and political role model.

But relations between the two neighbors have never been so simple.

China is by far the largest foreign investor in Myanmar, which boasts a trove of natural resources. And China also provides a road map for how one of Asia’s poorest nations might lift its citizens out of hand-to-mouth existences.

NAYPYITAW — China and Myanmar inked dozens of deals on Saturday to speed up infrastructure projects in the Southeast Asian nation, as Beijing seeks to cement its hold over a neighbour increasingly isolated by the West.

But no major new projects were agreed during the two-day visit by President Xi Jinping, the first of any Chinese leader in 19 years. Analysts said Myanmar was generally cautious of investments by Beijing and was also being careful ahead of elections later this year.

Still, Xi and Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi signed 33 agreements shoring up key projects that are part of the flagship Belt and Road Initiative, China’s vision of new trade routes described as a “21st century silk road”.

Fortify Rights urges Myanmar govt

The government of Myanmar should take steps to urgently restore full citizenship rights for Rohingyas, Fortify Rights said yesterday.

New evidence collected by Fortify Rights, including eyewitness testimonies and internal government documents, confirms that Myanmar authorities are continuing to force and coerce Rohingyas to accept National Verification Cards (NVCs), which effectively identify them as foreigners and strip them of access to full citizenship rights.

“The NVC is widely known as an abusive tool, and the government should scrap it without delay,” said Matthew Smith, chief executive officer of Fortify Rights.

Bangladesh plans to move 100,000 refugees to reduce the pressure on overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar. The swampy island emerged in 2006 and is regularly hit by monsoons. The UN is not yet ready to endorse the relocation without visiting the island first. 

Dhaka (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Bhasan Char Island, in the Gulf of Bengal, is ready to receive 100,000 Rohingya refugees, said yesterday Mahbub Alam Talukder, Bangladesh Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commissioner.

The island is subject to regular floods, but protection embankments have been built in the past few months to deal with the problem. Housing, shops and mosques have also been built.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah has urged the Asean to address the “civil war” in Myanmar’s Rakhine state to find a long-term solution to the Rohingya crisis.

“The discourse should be expanded beyond the immediate return [of Rohingyas] to a comprehensive discussion on the complexities of the conflict in Rakhine state,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page yesterday, the second day of a two-day Asean foreign ministers’ meeting in Vietnam.

China's Xi Jinping doubled down on his support for fallen rights icon Aung San Suu Kyi on Saturday, signing dozens of infrastructure and trade deals and meeting with the Myanmar army chief accused of overseeing a genocide against Rohingya Muslims.

The Chinese president's state visit to Myanmar's purpose-built capital came as Western investors give a wide berth to the country due to the Rohingya crisis.

A 2017 military crackdown on the minority, which UN investigators called genocide, forced around 740,000 people from western Rakhine state over the border into Bangladesh.
