In the best-case scenario, Myanmar would be rich like the East and democratic like the West. 

 Global media coverage has not been easy on Myanmar. The refugee crisis in northwestern Rakhine sparked a firestorm of international criticism that has only been intensified by allegations of ethnic cleansing. A barrage of punitive actions followed, though most were targeted at the Tatmadaw, the Myanmar military, and have not yet resulted in drastic, direct impact on the population at large. Still, serious contemplation was given to imposing broader economic restrictions, in particular the withdrawal of general scheme of preferences benefits by the European Union (EU).

YANGON—In a move timed to coincide with State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to Japan, dozens of Arakanese people staged a protest in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo on Monday afternoon condemning her government for arresting civilians and expanding the conflict in Rakhine State, a campaign they labeled a “silent genocide.”

The State Counselor arrived in Tokyo on Sunday night in order to attend the Japanese emperor’s enthronement ceremony on Tuesday. Upon her arrival, she was welcomed by a group of supporters who held a banner denouncing the planned embassy protest.

Arakan Army decries arrest of leader’s sister, husband

The Arakan Army (AA) has criticised the arrest of its leader’s sister and her ailing husband at Yangon International Airport over the weekend.

Khaing Thukha, the group’s spokesperson, said the arrest of Ma Moe Hnin Phyu and her husband, Ko Kyaw Naing, could worsen the conflict.

Ma Moe Hnin Phyu is the sister of AA chief Tun Myat Naing.

“They are not connected to the AA, and the current issue should be solved in political ways,” Khaing Thukha said, adding that the arrest had damaged the government’s reputation.

Gambia will be taking Myanmar to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to face charges of genocide against its Rohingya minority, said Gambia's Attorney General and Minister for Justice Abubacarr Marie Tambadou.

The charges, which will be filed by the Gambian Ministry of Justice's legal team, will be the first time that the Myanmar authorities will be accused of the crimes of genocide at the International Court of Justice, according to Asia Justice Coalition.

Bangladesh to move Rohingya to flood-prone island next month

DHAKA (Reuters) - Bangladesh will start relocating Rohingya Muslims to a flood-prone island off its coast next month as several thousand refugees have agreed to move, a government official said on Sunday.

Dhaka wants to move 100,000 refugees to Bhasan Char – a Bay of Bengal island hours by boat from the mainland – to ease overcrowding in its camps at Cox’s Bazar, home to more than 1 million Rohingya Muslims who have fled neighboring Myanmar.

The Hague Conclave on Justice and Accountability for the Rohingya has brought together critical issues for consideration by the international community.

The event was held on October 18, 2019 in the Hague, Netherlands which was organized by the Centre for Peace and Justice (CPJ), BRAC University, said a press release.

Having taken note of the abiding generosity and prompt humanitarian response by the Bangladesh government in support of the Rohingyas, the Conclave underscored the importance of the United Nations, relevant member states and regional bodies to each play a role in calling out the impunity of the Myanmar authorities, and finding a long term, viable and acceptable resolution to the Rohingya crisis.
