UN expert Yanghee Lee reiterates call

UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee yesterday repeated her call that the situation in Rakhine should be referred to the International Criminal Court. She implored the international community to maintain pressure on Myanmar amid a deterioration of human rights in the country.

မြန်မာနိုင်ငံနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး ICC ခေါ် အပြည်ပြည်ဆိုင်ရာ ရာဇဝတ်မှုခင်းဆိုင်ရာ တရားရုံးက ဇူလိုင်လ ၄ ရက်နေ့မှာ သတင်း တစ်ရပ် ထုတ်ပြန်ခဲ့ရာမှာ မြန်မာ-ဘင်္ဂလားဒေ့ရှ်အကြားက အခြေအနေနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး ICC အနေနဲ့ စုံစမ်းစစ်ဆေးမှုတွေ စတင် လုပ်ဆောင်နိုင်ဖို့ အတွက် ဥပဒေ အခွင့်အာဏာ ပေးအပ်ဖို့ ICC ရှေ့နေ Fatou Bensouda က ICC တရားသူကြီးတွေထံ တောင်းဆိုခဲ့ကြောင်း ဖော်ပြပါရှိခဲ့ပါတယ်။ ဒီလို တောင်းဆိုခဲ့ပြီးတဲ့နောက် ICC ရှေ့လှမ်းလာမယ့် ခြေလှမ်းနဲ့ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံအပေါ် အကျိုးသက်ရောက်မှု ဘယ်လို ရှိနိုင် မလဲဆိုတာကို Asian Human Rights Council က ရှေ့နေ ဦးမင်းလွင်ဦး ကို ကိုရဲမင်းထွန်းက မေးမြန်းတင်ဆက်ထားပါတယ်။

Prothom Alo: Did the election results in India surprise you?

Imtiaz Ahmed: Dynastic politics is Congress' biggest weakness. They could not form an opposition alliance. People could not rely on Rahul Gandhi. And BJP has widened its vote bank by using communalism. It is now a question as to how far India will survive as we know it. BJP was not supposed to win if we consider various issues including the rate of unemployment, 22 polluted cities out of 30 in the world, farmers’ hardship and demonetization. BJP has efficiently manipulated the election results. Earlier, Modi won the election by getting 36 per cent votes in two-third seats. I am waiting to find out what he has done this time. The rise of communalism is not only a concern for India, but for also its neighbours.

SC to hear plea seeking deportation of illegal Bangladesh nationals, Rohingyas

The Supreme Court Thursday agreed to hear a PIL seeking identification and deportation of all illegal immigrants and infiltrators including Bangladesh nationals and Rohingyas.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta took note of submission of lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay that his plea, which was filed in 2017, be listed for an urgent hearing.

"It would be listed for hearing on July 9," the bench, which also comprised Justice Deepak Gupta, said.

Sweden will continue its pressure on Myanmar to take back its nationals who have taken shelter in Bangladesh after being evicted from Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

Swedish ambassador to Bangladesh Charlotta Schlyter said this during a courtesy call on road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader at his secretariat office in Dhaka on Wednesday. The Swedish ambassador also assured that Swedish government would continue its cooperation for repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh.

Charlotta Schlyter invited Obaidul Quader to join the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety to be held in Stockholm in February next.

The Swedish ambassador expressed interest to supply Swedish bus to increase the capacity of mass transit facility in the capital Dhaka.

In September 2017, Muhammad Habib Ismail joined fellow Rohingya Muslims on a march through downtown Chicago. Prime minister’s International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi has said the Rohingya crisis will become the biggest security threat to South Asian countries in the coming days.

“The long-running Rohingya crisis is now Bangladesh’s problem, but it will be the entire world’s problem tomorrow,” he said while addressing the inaugural session of a seminar in Dhaka as the chief guest on Wednesday, reports BSS.

Human rights abuses that may amount to fresh war crimes are being committed against civilians in Myanmar’s restive Rakhine and Chin states, the UN has said, as the fighting between the military and rebel groups intensifies.

Speaking to the UN human rights council (UNHRC), Yanghee Lee, the UN special rapporteur on Myanmar, detailed accounts of abduction and torture of civilians by both the Myanmar army and the rebel insurgent group the Arakan Army, which is fighting for greater autonomy in the region.

“The conflict with the Arakan Army in northern Rakhine state and parts of southern Chin state has continued over the past few months and the impact on civilians is devastating,” Lee told the UNHRC on Tuesday. “Many acts of the Tatmadaw [Myanmar armed forces] and the Arakan Army violate international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes, as well as violating human rights.”

  Myanmar: Expert calls for continued pressure as situation reaches “human rights crisis”

GENEVA (3 July 2019) – A UN human rights expert implored the international community to maintain pressure on Myanmar amid a deterioration of human rights in the country, citing concerns about possible war crimes in Rakhine State, the treatment of minorities, the environment and freedom of expression.

The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, addressed the Human Rights Council in Geneva and welcomed the Government’s reforms to the accounting requirements of extractive industry State-owned economic enterprises. “This is an opportunity for the Government to improve transparency in the sector, and to ensure that departments tasked with enforcing environmental and social safeguards are properly resourced,” the expert said.
